Hi Guys,
I wanted to introduce myself, I am Thinking about getting one of these when they come out. My Daily Driver is a 2005 Legacy GT and my current project car is a 1974 Corvette. I picked my forum name because I went to Ga Tech and it is part of our fight song.
I think the Factory Five guys are really on to something here. I am torn between going NA or Turbo. SWMBO drives a Honda DelSol for her fun car and I could see her wanting to take a finished 818 over from me. So I am not sure If I want her driving such a beast if I used one of the EJ255 Turbo motors. I wonder how a high compression EJ255 motor would run without a turbo?

Welcome to the forum. I will just state up front that we won't hold it against you that you went to Ga Tech. :) I also think Factory Five is on to something here. Actually talked to a guy at work about the 818 today. He has been looking at a Harley.

Welcome to the forum! A quick scan of wikipidia says the 05+ model single cam ej25's from the base impreza was rated at 173 HP. If your gonna build it hi-comp NA it might be cheaper to start there. I guess if you start with a Turbo block you'll never have to worry about the bottom end though.
SWMBO, that's a new one! You'll have to enlighten me.

Bugeye I think it means She who must be obeyed or something like that.

I prefer to think of my wife as SWMBC.
She who must be convinced (otherwise, that I can do this, that I know what I'm doing, etc etc)

Sorry, That was habit from another forum. It stands for She Who Must Be Obeyed.
I already have an extra EJ255, but I am in the early stage of thought on this. A high revving engine would be OK. THE EJ255 should be able to hit 7,500 with just some attention to a few things.

I think if I do one, it has to be a Targa top. I also like the double hump square tube roll bar I saw in one of the mock ups.
Is there an estimate on when they will start shipping the kit?
Is anyone else thinking about a Targa?

I grew up in Chattanooga as a Vol fan, but then I saw the light. :) They are still my second favorite though. My family and SWMBO's family all still live in Tennessee.

Time frame is October/November, with kits shipping in early 2013. Given FFR's history, I expect they'll probably be on track for slightly sooner shipping.
As for a targa, that was a very popular idea. FFR has stated they plan multiple body types for this chassis, so many of us are HOPING one of those is a targa. Given it's popularity, and how it could easily accommodate a coupe style as well (which is probably the best route for the high fuel economy variant), I'd be somewhat surprised if they DON'T build a targa.

Use an AccessPort and get 2 tunes, one typical map and one for her. Keep the wastegate open all the time? Lower redline?

I am still building but I hope it will be kind of like a drunk saying they will never drink, again, or a woman just after giving birth saying she will never do that again! So I have a feeling I will get over the "I'll never finish this thing" syndrome after a few months.
I have heard that it will be early (end of first qtr) 2013 for deliveries to begin but that could depend on a lot of things. I haven't read all the threads so that may have been updated. I'm sure FFR would hold a month if it meant making sure the kits went out as expected. I have been pleading for an early release of the Targa but I think it is falling on deaf ears. It's such a big project, I don't think Daves wants to get "too many irons in the fire". There are a few already! So that will put my project out there a little further.
I'm with you. I would have to have a Targa top as many others have mentioned. I think the Targa design adds so much to the overall feel and it's cool because it reminds me of the Cameros and Firebirds of old. It's easier than a convertible and not as confining as a coupe.
WEK

I guess second favorite is not too bad. Heck, lately I think second favorite might be a little generous. :)

I was born and raised in Chattanooga, too. Left the state for AZ in 97. Still miss the scenery but not the humidity! A targa 818 would give us one more thing in common. Here's to the future 818. WEK.

Yea an 818 would be great in that general area. Before I moved to Chattanooga, we lived in Western North Carolina. We used to take this road all of us kids called the sea sick road every Sunday. Today that road is called Tail of the Dragon. My grandparents live in Robbinsville NC and my parents live in Telico Plains. So I get to hit the skyway and the dragons tail all the time.
I need to make it an all weather car due to how much more it rains up there in the mountains. Hopefully the Targa will not be to far behind. Or there is an easy retrofit kit.

When I was a kid, before the interstate was built through the mountains, the Dragon was the way across. I have ridden in the back seat of an old Volkswagon with my 2 other brothers going to South Carolina way too many times to count. I think over the years, I threw up at every curve of the Dragon. :) Wasn't a gas station every few miles either, so we took a "break" in a quart Mason Jar. Ahhh....... those were the days.
