Hi all!

I'm a FFR fan and ahve been around the SCCA/NASA camps for about 5 years. Saw the GRM 818 article and had to check it out. I am building a stage rally car from 2 WRX's and the 818 seems like a great place to store some spares! But I have to consider all my options.

I'll be lurking and if you want to get involved in motorsports in the MidSouth region let me know, I can point you at the right people.

Hi Rick,

Welcome to the forum. Since you have some experience with the circuits, do you have an opinion on where you think the 818 will likely fit into the mix? There has been a lot of discussion about that but it would be interesting to here from your perspective. I think it's own class would be great but at the beginning, there may not be enough to warrant that. Thanks, WEK.

Thanks for the welcome!

Ya know, I have a while to figure out where the car will run. It would probably make a nice time trial weapon but I'll have to have a long read of the NASA rules to figure out where it will land. I'm going to start a blog to track progress through the process of teardown and should things pan out a build of an 818.

It looks like you are from Mesa (or AJ.) My in laws are in town from Mesa.

Welcome Rick. Glad you joined the forum. Nice to see someone from Tennessee other than me lurking around the 818.

[QUOTE=skullandbones;66342...opinion on where you think the 818 will likely fit into the mix?[/QUOTE]

While a spec class would be exciting it may take a few years to get enough examples out there to form a class. I think that NASA's STR2 class would be the target until then. The formula looks like this

War weight = 1800lbs
Driver weight = 210 lbs
DOT approved 245mm wide tires (race slicks with a groove)
Car Max HP = 225hp

This gives an “Adjusted” Wt/Hp Ratio of 8.7333 which would be the minimum (8.70) for STR2. If you are heavier you can add HP and if you are lighter you can add creature comforts (or ballast) or drop some HP. Under no circumstances do you want the weight of the car+driver to drop below 1850 as the penalty is hefty.

In reading the rules it looks like all tube frame race cars will be removed from eligibility for ST2 leaving only STR2. ST2 cars will probably still be eligible for STR2.

Of course if you are a super speed freak there is always STR1 and STU!
