Hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but considering that the 818 will be mid-engined, does it matter if the donor car has an automatic transmission? Or should I only be looking for donors with manual transmissions?

Do you want your 818 to have a manual or automatic? Your donor should match, but the automatic won't officially be supported by FFR at first.
Early cars had a fairly simple 4 speed 2WD automatic tranny that should be a very easy modification to the basic kit.
Later cars have an AWD automatic that would need some type of conversion kit.
All are of the same basic design and are computer controlled. Up to about 2000 the control module is simple and doesn't directly talk to the ECU.

I want the automatic but everyone has shot it down as being too long. I thought I would wait and see if I can make a
Small interior detent to move things fOrward a few inches. I'm hoping for success but then again I can weld and fabricate....steven

Thanks for the detailed responses. I can live with either configuration, but think my preference is manual. I had come across a great deal on a donor that was an automatic & wanted to check on the feasibility of it before pulling the trigger, but I'll pass on it and keep looking. I built a Cobra before that I planned as a donor build then ended up only using the block from the donor. I don't want to go down that route again.

I can't remember, will the kit come with the parts to convert the manual WRX trans to 2WD? I see the mods in pictures of the test mule. I am wondering if this conversion is part of the deal?

Yes, I'm pretty sure Jim or Dave mentioned that. It's just a plate and a special cog and of course the shifter adapter cables and such. Should be included with the kit.
