View Full Version : Rear Cockpit Wall - Glove Box?

I'm putting a heater in my roadster, so don't really have good room for the traditional dash mounted glove box. However, I was considering creating essentially a "glove box" between the seats, using some of the trunk space (mounting the battery under the hood) as the storage compartment. It seems like this way I could still get a locking compartment that I could access from the cockpit. Has anyone seen anything like this? I've seen several "open" access points in this area, but nothing with a hinged and locking door. The fabrication seems pretty simple. In essence, I'd cut an opening in the rear wall panel, create an aluminum box that mounts behind the opening, then use a piano hinge to mount a door. I could carpet over the door, so other than the latch and lock, you really wouldn't see anything. This seems to be a fairly straight forward modification, and seems to be a pretty reasonable idea, but I'm thinking maybe I'm missing something as I haven't seen anyone else doing this.

Please let me know what you think of the idea, and if there is some drawback that I haven't considered. Obviously, I realize that the location means it will only be safe to access the compartment when the vehicle is parked, but that still works for me. If you've seen this, or done this yourself, I'd sure appreciate knowing about that as well (pictures or measurments would be hugely appreciated)

Lots of people have done this. I used the box made by Darkwater.

Perfect. Just looked at Darkwater and that is exactly what I'm after. I might make one that is a little larger box, but the same idea. Or I may just purchase the one from Darkwater! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I made an open box that is almost full width. I think maybe you should do the same width but w/ a door like DWCs. You could stuff a light jacket or two or a plastic rainsuit in the ends and just leave them there. Then the remaining center area could be a traditional glovebox size.

Or you can just make your own. Not hard to do.

I made mine which is pretty much identical to Mikey's as far as size and shape. I made the door flush with a piano hinge and ran the carpet over it.

Mikey_p- how did you bend the aluminum to such clean right angles?
