View Full Version : Current 818 (May 2012) Coupe Add-Ons

Vman7

Here is a Preview of one of the Coupe Add-ons so far.

Based on the Vantage, but totally reworked to work with the current 818 body.

Note: the front end of the body is the old 818. I have to rework that to reflect the current 818 body.

Once I get all the details done on the body, Coupe etc., then I will go back and clean up the body and do the add-ons for the body.

You should add your own iterations to the design like the rear vent going alongside the door. To me, that is something FFR MUST do. Honestly wasn't too happy with the design that was released by FFR but I really like the small changes you added. It does change the car considerably enough for me to be happy with purchasing that design rather then settling with the old one.

Damn. It seems like Jim has some competition... Lol jk but seriously this is getting hotter and hotter. Seems like a simple addition too. If FFR doesn't make a top like this then some third vendor should step up to the plate... Wink .... Wink

That looks incredible! I want it.

I went to the Targa Newfoundland last year (to film it, not to drive), and I've been daydreaming of running the event some day. It's officially on my bucket list, and I think the 818 could be the perfect car for the event. That is, provided it's got real climate protection. Windows and a fixed roof are really very necessary in an event that ALWAYS gets rainy days.

For track days, an open-topped 818 is great, but for endurance racing you'd really want that closed cockpit and a strong defroster to keep the window clear.

Thanks everybody!:)

I am working on getting the front to reflect the current 818, as well as working on another coupe design, targa and a "so called" quick hard/soft top (mostly a short coupe with opt. targa/soft top).

One thing has been bothering me though, is when I first layed out the 818 cad drawing to scale was the orig contest template doesn't really fit right in some areas, mostly the wheel wells, they seem to be off, mostly on the front. Not sure what's going on there. I am thinking that the cad drawing might have been changed somewhat since Jim changed the front end look. No big deal, I'll just adjust it a little to look better, but not take away from the current design.

I need to really get working on the body and clean it up etc., but having so much fun working with ideas for the coupe etc. ....:)

edit add-on....lol
btw have some new ideas for the rear as well, not sure how I am going to lay them out though, since I haven't found any real good rear shots of the 818. I might just use the Vantage since it is somewhat close and work with that. Trying to take what I have seen what Jim has done so far, and just work with it, to kind of make it "more exciting" using real world parts. Try and work with a single or duel exhaust, a single can be hard to make it look pleasing.

David,

You're my hero! Keep up the awesome and inspirational work. Your designs are helping to bring out what is so special about building kits, that with creativity and skill you can put your thumb print firmly into what you build and make it uniquely yours. Anyone who's ever built a FFR Cobra knows that no two are alike and skies the limit on mods and directions you can go in.

Vman7
06-29-2012, 09:28 PM
I think I am going to put all this mod stuff on hold for a while. There will be plenty of time to do it later, once FFR comes out with their first body style. I just don't want to do everything all over again. Now if they don't release some good side, front, rear, 3/4 views later, it's going to make it tough to do any decent mod renderings, like the 65 coupe, still waiting for some good side shots of that one, and I even asked people for some, still nothing and that was over the last coupe of years......arrhh.

Anyhoot, mod.s on hold for now, unless I get really bored again.......lol

I wish they would have extended the side vent shape into the door. Most kits for your typical mazda, honda, toyota etc. incorporate vents and they are usually only in single panels. I get it, easier manufacturing and less tolerance is needed. The real exotic cars seem to run the curves into the doors. I like how you did it Vman in your designs, I hope factory five can do something like that so it doesn't look so mainstream manufactured.

Nice work man. I wonder if you can work that into a removable hard top somehow. It'd be difficult to get it to seal I imagine but would sell like hotcakes even it if it meant having some internal fabric to seal the top and the rest being for design.

Hey Brandon, I'm not picking on you here. :) I've seen a number of posts where "keeping the water out" (as I'll call it) is a concern. As someone who loves them and has owned them in the past, let me state emphatically it's not reasonable to expect never to get water in a convertible. It's GOING to happen. And it won't be a big deal, I promise! They dry out. If that makes you cringe, you might consider waiting for the coupe. (I'm making the assumption here anyone concerned about waterproofing isn't planning on driving it only on sunny days...)

That said, the convertibles I've owned are more waterproof than you'd expect. The top rail (that seals the top to the windshield) has a rubber gasket, and it works pretty well. Would it stop a monsoon? Probably not, but it won't allow much to get into the car. The windows just rested against the top, but very little water actually got in - even when raining hard. There was a small lip to channel water falling off the roof away from the windows, and it worked very well. These are simple things that can either be built in to a top (hard, soft, targa), or fairly easily added after the fact.

Point being, it's really not a big deal. It will be OK! :D

Neither actually. It's like a regular coupe with a vertical window behind the seats.

Something along the line of what I did on the Vantage.

Vman7, like I said in my pm's to you I'm glad you are back in the game. I'm dying for a coupe model that looks like what you have come up with. My only concern so far is people talking about keeping the roof line low. My MAJOR concern would to be able to put a roll bar under there. I'm thinking about putting another bar just behind the top edge of the windshield and some how tying it to the aft roll bar, so that my helmet would not be above the roll cage/bar. I plan on driving this to and from the track. I guess if I'm going to dream I might as well dream big, I want it all for $9,990 plus the additional cost for the coupe roof styling.

I think he meant that opening that large were overkill for the radiator and would only add drag.

bbjones121

Yes to what Mechie said. Granted it looks nice, but the center opening is for the radiator. On a Ferrari, there are two angled radiators that require the side openings.

Was't aware of the Ferrari having 2 radiators. If you didn't care about keeping the stock radiator, it might be interesting trying to fit two small radiators and using the entire front as a trunk. Hmm

ok here is a teaser....lol

Yes it's the new 818, yes those are real taillights (hella), and yes the taillights are to scale......lol

The idea is to use modules for everythings, taillight area, ctr section (molded in) etc., that way you can swap out the desired look you are looking for.

Not finished with it yet, but I thought I would post what I have so far, needs more shading, shadows etc. I also have a few other ideas.

This is keeping me busy until there are some really good pics for doing the coupe/targa.

I forgot to mention that this idea is for the Street version, but could be used for the Race version as well. It was the only pic straight on of the 818 so far.

Mechie3, the upper vent area (center) is for either an American or Aussie Lic. Plate, euro would have to go down on the bottom area.

Can put lic plate top or bottom, exhaust top or bottom (dual center or wide apart)

it looks as if you bought the S, you could potentially fabricate Vman's rear bumper. If you got a precutout R, it's be a lot more work. I think that the main reason Vman's model looks better is the 3D-ness of it. The 818R looks a little too flat where the mesh was added. Even if they keep the original shape, they should add a bevel around the edge to make it look like it was original instead of someone cutting it out and adding it later.

Compare it to a ferrari challenge grille and you can see how it has a slow curve, then bevels around the lights. I hope I can fabricate something likeVmans rendering without messing it up. lol

Not sure yet, looking into it. I might wait until I finshed working with everything else first.

it looks as if you bought the S, you could potentially fabricate Vman's rear bumper. If you got a precutout R, it's be a lot more work.

It would work with either one since you would cutout the upper taillight section all together, then take the ctr module and fiberglass that in, then put in the 2 outer vent modules, then put in the 2 taillight modules, then the ctr Lic Plate/ or ctr vent module.

I have it all pretty much figured out, just the details on how to attach each module, something FFR could or might figure out.

These could definitely be possible as upgrades in the future by FFR or a 3rd party.

Those look like Saleen SR7 vents.

Like I said above, not done yet, still needs more shading, shadows etc. , plus different layouts, including exhausts etc.

That gray trim piece you see in the upper ctr vent area, is actually the Lic Plate frame, the Lic Plate fits inside that area flush. It will all make sense once I get them all done. :)

I have about 4 major Ideas for the rear, about the same for the front. Which could be done for the most part without doing any real major changes to the orig panels, except for one or two ideas I have for the front.

The original rear on the r version recalls the shapes of the vents on the hood and the deck continuing a design theme. Vman's work on the rear detracts from that symmetry. It is easy to redesign one facet of a thing without adhering to the design concepts of the rest of the work.

Normally I would just ignore such comments (the hate, arrogant stuff), but some of the people who have joined this forum say in the last 6 months may not remember the ones that used to be regulars here and bash everything and everybody, there was 3 that come to mind, which I won't mention. Vman, don't let any of those comments get you down! Not many people on this forum can do what you can do(if there are, then correct me please)! IMHO, your designs are what FFR should go with or at least offer as an option. Heck, I'd be content with a template that I would just need to cut out around to make it even look remotely like your design!! All in all Vman, keep up the good work!

Vman, I'm sorry you feel insulted by my statement, but I did back it up with an example. I didn't mean to rub you wrong. I stated a truth. Sorry it hurt you. I have been a professional designer and builder since 1976 and am always open to criticism, it hurt me too when I was young, it is part of what we do. Do you think the real design team on this car calls you a 'hater' just because you don't approve of their work? I don't think so.

Vman, I am really sorry I hurt your feelings. I had no idea that I was going to bruise you. I am sorry. I was merely stating that you were diverging from a theme in the original design. I suppose that I shouldn't have used the word 'detracts'. I wouldn't be on this forum if I didn't think your drawings were interesting, your drawing is nice. Your Vantage was nice too. Also, I know nothing about you but what you draw, I guess I'm sorry about that as well.

I think the important thing is that it's ok to be critical, but it needs to come across as a factual (as close as possible with opinionated things like looks) argument, not a personal attack. I think the comments might have been founded (from his point of view) but it came across as "you're a bad designer" not "I don't like your design" or "I think it should tie in more elements". As an engineer, I see people get emotionally attached to various concepts and they others aren't tactful enough to critique the design and not the designer.

I am debating weither or not to retract the above comment...... continue on with my graphics efforts or not, I'll make up my mind sometime to night.

First off, it's not like I just throw something out there, I do a lot of thinking about it, I look at everything over and over again before starting something.

Not going to explain all the thought that goes into my design ideas. Mostly this one. Just look at the front and see if you see an "X" pattern that I see.

2nd I am not in a bad mood, that lasted about 5min.s

3rd I know those who like my stuff as well as others, I enjoy other peoples ideas and designs as well. So don't get upset with what is coming.....

I have made up my mind, at least for now or maybe once the 818 comes out, not to do anymore designs, graphics related to any of the forums here. The only way I will do some is by request from either Dave Smith, FFR, web master or the site Admin.

I'll still be in the forums, just no design work or graphics, unless requested by those I mentioned above.

Vman, It sure would be nice if a third party would pick up your designs and offer them as an option.

On that note, a third party might be able to do a Ferrari 458 skin and get away with it! (They wouldn't be selling any cars, now would they?)

Speaking of the Ferrari skin thing, I think it was last week I did a search on a Mercedes Benz Gullwing (the famous one from way back) and what came up was a company that was making a replica of it an Mercedes Benz got a hold of it and destroyed it. Do a search on Mercedes Benz 300 Gullwing.

It has nothing to do with the criticism, providing it's not arrogant and con-descending, weither I agree to criticism or not. I don't get my feelings or get so called "bruised" easily.

Yes Dave S. did for a softtop and a hardtop coupe design. David H. tried to get some good side shots at SEMA, and I thank him for that. But so far there really isn't any real good side shots or rear of the 818s to really work with to do it any justice.

Steve, some parts like the tail lights and Lic Plate area are derived from the Vantage and reshaped. Nothing really from the Avenger, but I can see how it somewhat gives that look.

The rear shot of this 818R is actually pretty good, centered, right angle from top to bottom, could be just a little lower. The only problem with this shot is when taking the shot, should have been further back, can tell by how much curve is in the fenders, which is from the camera lens, other then that pic is just about right.

Steve, thanks for asking for some rear shots :), I might have to post some pics of some other cars to show what would be a good pic to work with.

I don't think we should do that. What they've designed is great for the kit price! What I'd like to see is some options for the front/rear. That would be a good sales booster! Also, no coupe now but down the line after they've sold enough kits they'll roll out some more versions!

No cutouts for the rear deck, just the rear. I do have some ideas for the rear deck for the coupe though, but that might not come about until the so called coupe design gets more cues from Dave Smith.

Very nice! There would be no need for a downpipe as the exhaust could come straight back from the turbo with the exhaust turning 90 degrees into a central muffler over the transmission which then has two exhaust ports onn each side with the pipes routed to the locations you show in your picture. The muffler would be simylar to ones used in late model WRX dual exhausts. Awesome job!

HI metalmaker12,

Sorry, but I have only used GIMP on Windows platforms.

I agree that FFR will not likely change its design direction at this time. However, the good news is that Vman7s great design can be achieved by using different cut outs of the 818 as designed. There is always a chance that a third party will fabricate the other inserted panels if FFR does not. FFR gives us the canvas to create variations on the art.

Not entirely sure about the EU but the UK does allow for a more 'square' rear number plate, for example:

Im really liking the 2nd and 3rd one down. You have quite the talent for this!

David - What is right?

Doing it with a good rear photo and have everything blend in, so it looks real, the right shading, sizes right etc., not just a mock-up.

All the tail lights, exhaust are pretty close to scale on the mock-ups though.

Vman, welcome back... you have been missed :)

Love the ones above.... first and last are my fav but they are all great.

Would be interested in seeing your ideas for a single exhaust (non-center mount), since doing dual looks cool but is really tough on this car.

Thanks :) always here, just not in the 818 section.

I have heard that also about the dual exhaust. I guess it has to do with the transaxle.

Not sure where to put a single exhaust, I would have to think about it.

Yeah, I can't think of a good option either so I've been planning on having it hidden but if someone came up with a cool idea, I'd use it!

Ever think of learning to make fiberglass molds and making some parts as a side biz ;)

Actually I have. I have done some fiberglass work before, but is was mostly patch work when I had my jet boat back in the early 80s in Norcross, GA

I would love to do a bunch molds etc.

My biggest problem is either lack of funds and or a place to do stuff, and right now it's been both. Money has been really tight about the last 8yr.s. Still waiting on that lottery check....rofl

Stop....just stop. Too many good things I can't have! Haha!

The first is a bit supra-ish (not a bad thing). I like the idea of splitting that section into two with a solid plate on top and mesh on the bottom. I like the third and fourth one as well. Time to make a new bumper....

The more i think about it, the more i want to do the 1st design. Any idea where to buy those lights as a running/brake light?

With my intent to put the fmic in the rear, i dont think ill be able to split it up the way he has it, even tho i like it that way.

Some were moved by me to albums, the new ones posted lately you should be able see, unless you came in on this page and then logged in, you have to refresh the page for some reason when doing that.

Later today sometime I will start a new 818 thread like my other design threads (like Vman's 33 hot rod design ideas) and put links to all of my 818 threads and albums all in one place.

go to Susquehanna Motorsports (http://www.rallylights.com/)

The split between the top and bottom (top-tail lights/bottom vent) in the mock-ups doesn't really show how they are the vents are set back where the inset for the orig tail lights are and tail lights above are flush, more outward. To get an idea get out the rear on my Vantage. Of course it would be a different shape and tail lights, but you get an idea of how the vent is back and the tail lights are flush.

I hope we get to see what Factory Five did with your Hardtop design soon.

Ah, yes, i didnt notice that detail from the original rendering. I like it.

Also, it says the lights are discontinued.

They might be discontinued because they have an LED replacement. Look for p/n 2PF 009 001-421. I don't know if they come with colored lenses or not.

David, FFr should hire you. They could use someone who has the skillset you have. They talked about alternative bodies for the 818 already, they'd be stupid not to bring you in for the design work, IMHO. FFR, are you listening??? (They already used your hardtop) I also understand not wanting to give all your ideas out and then have someone make them and you get no credit or money for it. Just one of the reasons I'm not showing any of my GTM redesign until it's finished being built. I know the builders here appreciate the ideas, but it's a shame you're not compensated somehow for all the work.

So I'm going to throw my 2 cents in I liked the 3rd design but I would make a few minor changes that I think would be nice.

First I would move the Backup lights to be one on each set of lights & then I would replace the third LED with a Turn signal either in Orange or Amber.

I'm debating with myself, but from post #147, 3rd and 4th pix are my top 1.
With the 1 reverse light integrated in the diffuser. And luckily, though I have to respect some heights on the other lights around the car, the reverse light can be fitted anywhere at any height, so I'm good with the law on that one. :)

Thanks for all the comments! :)

I'll address everything posted lately. It looks like a few are on the same subject.

I see that the Hella 9001 tail light might be discontinued. I'll have to check my resources on that. Hella has in one of their own sites (hard to navigate btw, hard to find the spec pages unless you know where to go) that has everything etc.

If it is true that Hella has discontinued the 9001 series which is the center light to the ring/center light combo 9362 (LED ring)/9001 (ctr light). There is going to be trouble FFR once they run out of them for the 818, and not to mention all the companies around the world that use that combo on their cars. I'll look into it.

Keep in mind those were just some ideas I through together quick. I love all the suggestions on LED strips. BU light(s) could go almost anywhere, just depends on the overall look on the best placement, which would be a few. LED Turn could be in a bunch of different combos when it comes to strip LED, or even for the oval and round LED types (haven't posted any yet).

Very good question. Not sure, it would be nice if either FFR or a 3rd Party would pick up some of this stuff.

Somewhere in one of my threads I talked about how the rear and the rest of the 818 could done in modules/componet, and just by changing the module or componet you have a different look.

I checked a few of my resources, mostly the main Hella ones, and on Hella's own official catalog site it still has the 9001 series, they don't have it listed as 9001 though, just as SKU #. It makes me wonder if Hella still makes/sells them for USA though.

I called the store, they have the red 9001 lights in stock (more than 4 anyways that i asked for them to verify in stock).

Im not looking to spend another $220 shipped at the moment for the lights. Im going to play around with the LED strips when they arrive before making the leap.

Still researching the Hella lights. They have come out with a few new ones, but that can really work with the 818.
Hella's catalog does show those 9001 series in a few places, so it looks like they still make them, just a matter of seeing where and if they still are selling them in the USA.

Downside with LEDs is they can get real expensive fast.

Looking further into the LED strip that i bought, a lot of the reviews state that the LED strip overheated and eventually burned out. This was kind of disappointing.I really want the LED strip to be pretty much sold with no individual LED standing out.

If anyone knows of a source for something like that and the can be adjusted for length, let me know.

I was thinking more that some assortment of shipped parts would be attached together to form a larger clamshell portion. It would just need to be designed with more structure and a large hinge in mind.
