Well, my car is about done. Tomorrow morning its getting picked up and off to paint it goes. I have been torn for 3 weeks now as to how to paint it. Should I go black with dark metallic gray stripes or a super bright blue with metallic bright white/pearl stripes? My wife says black but I'm really lost. I have black spoked wheels with polished lips on the car now.

I never would have thought this would be so difficult..

i'm thinking of this color blue now.. BASF pearl blue

Having had black and other dark cars,,,,,If you like to spend more time cleaning your car than driving it,,,go for black. Ford "Grabber Blue" is a bright blue that was used on the Boss 302/429 mustangs,Cobra Torino's and even on the Pinto's. It stands out making your car more visible in traffic.(Plus it is my favorite color LOL).

I have Hot Rod Black with Wimbilton White strip and the black shows all the dust. It really doesnt bother me though, i didnt build a show car, i built the cobra for the fun of building and for something to beat on. IMO blue is just overdone

I'm a big fan of these cars in black, they just look mean.

If you're going striped though I like Rich's idea better, Metallic Gray with Black stripes then vice versa.

Another vote for black:

Black is hard to keep clean though.

If you like to see every flaw, go with a dark color. I once had a black car and I will never have one again because it required so much maintenance to look good. With white, you just drive through the rain and, presto!, clean car.
My Roadster is Guardsman Blue on Wimbledon White and it still looks really good after five years. The colors also give the car a more "period correct" look.
As for being unique, there is no such thing anymore. We've done all the colors, the flames, the ghosting, the rivetted panel effects. We have them in purple, pink, and lime green. You just have to pick something you like, even if it's been done. FWIW, my color scheme is a copy of Philip Deal's.

I voted other. If I built another one, I would add a black car with bright silver stripes to the stable.

I actually just decided on black myself. I'm shooting the donor hood as a test soon.

I told my bride that the roadster should look like when it encountered a line of school kids in the cross walk, it would literally just slow down, eat them, and keep going. I think black accomplishes that.

I have a bunch of black pics if you want to see more, PM me your email.

No offense to the classic blue guys either, but if you pick up a kit car mag and look at the pics of these types of cars, a LOT of them a blue. Maybe for good reason, sure, but I think I'd forget which one was mine. ;->

I had a black 67 Chevelle that I loved, which had 2x the square feet of body as the roadster. Easy solution for the dark color = dirt...California Car Duster.

If you are willing to deal with the maintenance issues of a black car, then black with silver ghost stripes is by far my favorite. Rad22 on the "other site" is my favorite.
Second choice would be dark silver metalic (pepper grey?) with black stripes. Really looks sharp and maintains the mean look these cars can have.
I went with Lexus Indigo Ink blue with Wimbledon white stripes. The car will stop traffic and gets tons of attention. It is however another blue car. Interesting thing for me is that we enthusiasts get deep into the debate of too many blue cars, etc. but the public rarely sees one of these cars on the road and for them, blue works.

Color choice is tough. My daughter and I went out and looked at a lot of cars to get a sense of what color worked best for me as well as the car. Have fun with it.

Trying to minimize number of colors. Eleanor gray, black stripes, black side pipes and black roll bar.

Blue with white stripes makes it a belly-button cobra. You want something that when someone mentions the color of the cobra driving down the road. You know it was you.

Q: Hey I saw a Blue with White stripes cobra yesterday was that you?
A: Maybe, but it could have been Joe, or Bob, or Mike, or John. What kind of guages or interior did it have?
Q: Never mind

If you are building it to sell, then Blue and White.

Otherwise the closest choice of the 2 would be the same as what the newer Mustang is using Tungsten T8 TL gray and a silver stripe.

Body?: Tungsten Gray Metallic Clearcoat T8/M7145A
Stripes?: Satin Silver Pearl Metallic Clearcoat TL/M7049

Black is "bear" for swirl marks and any imperfections.

fitnessguy,

Since you PM'd me, I thought I'd post another pic or two for you... the light is a little different in these than the other photos, so you can see the difference in the hue depending on the light.

Good luck with your decision !

I did Patriot Blue with white stripes but I would mimic Magnus' car if I were to do it again. A white FFR with blue stripes looks instantly vintage. A great look.

Can't beat Blue/Wht

There is a reason why there are so many. Most common is Blue, red, and black.

Good luck....

OldGuy's car looks awesome. Mine is black metallic, but in retrospect I wish I had done a metallic silver stripe. Go Guardsman Blue with the white stripe for resale value if you plan to sell the car. Also wish I had the Halibrands like Pig.

I second Magnus' caution about how dark colors, and most especially black, are most unforgiving of any bodywork flaws, while white is the most forgiving. There are no flat surfaces on these lovely bodies, and deciding on black paint suggests taking extra care in insuring flawless flows from one curve to the next. Also, decades ago, I had a bicycle with a seat that was half black and half white. On sunny days, the black half of that seat was mighty hot. I often like riding my FFR with my left arm atop the driver's door, and red stays relatively cool.
Forums like this have several posts dealing with color preferences and choice. From what I read here, those of us who choose black are very passionate about their decision. These cars are all about passion!

My seat is hotter than my motor. This would occur in a white car as well, doesn't really matter what color you paint a roadster with black seats and black carpet.....now a coupe would be a different story.

Hey Russ.... my interior stays nice and cool :) ...it's always "in the shade" on hot sunny days which saves me from burning my fanny and prevents my interior from UV fade. LOL

My original wheels were Compomotives, but I replaced them with the American SB427P's last year. I love the full polish of the new wheels, but they are a lot of work to keep clean. My car is pin-drive width IRS which is why they have such a deep dish....they are bolt-on's with lug covers, not knock-off.

FITNESSGUY08 - Post some pics up once you are done with your paint ! Look forward to seeing it...

well, colors have been finalized today. Went with the basf pearl blue and lexus pearl white stripes. should look nice I think. The blue is ridiculoulsy deep and bright. its the color of the linginfelter vette in my 1st post.
