Tonight I finished up the frame work in the rear hatch and started on the battery mount. Is 1/2" angle substantial enough or should I go up to 3/4"? Here are some pics of one side tacked together. My plan is to use two pieces welded to the X-member and front 4" cross tube. Then bolt the F5 battery tray and use an aftermarket hold down bracket.

Tim,

The 1/2" angle should be just fine. Also, for what it's worth, I would clean that steel a little better before you weld it. I get the best results when I prepare steel as if I planned to paint it. With that caveat, have at it!

This is just to see how everything lines up. It will be cleaned up before welding. I'm not even using the pieces I made tonight. It would be stronger to rotate the upright section 180° and get some weld on the underside of the X-Frame.

Looks fine, go ahead as planned.
