Automobile’s Ezra Dyer did a fun video for Yahoo Autos a while back on the new McLaren supercar and compared briefly to a Factory Five GTM. A tremendous amount of reader interest regarding the GTM lead him to write this cool blog for The New York Times Auto section.

The ls7 nettes you a "machine fast enough to find the higgs boson"

I laughed at that part.

This article is a far cry better than the Yahoo video review. Nicely done...and who says the GTM is on the way out? :)

Awesome coverage Dave. I think this article addresses lots of the reasons we buy a gtm. My personal reason is not addressed. I purchased a gtm because I can build it into MY dream car. Not a factory that needs to build to the least common denominator.

Speaking of factory cars,I had the pleasure of driving a few 2012 911 , boxster, and panameras on the track last week. Porsche builds an awesome product. The new boxster is a car I would be happy to own. The Carreras S is one of the best cars I have ever driven.

I would never trade my unfinished gtm for those cars.

The best part of the gtm is the fact that you earn the car. You pour your blood and sweat into the car to give it life. Ezra has not built a gtm so he drives it as a consumer not a producer

Nothing against Ezra as he has done many a great write up of cool cars. It's not the same however.

I personally would like to see a gtm go head to head with the factory cars. No doubt a major high line manufacturer can beat a gtm on the cush factor. But if you want a sanitized super car the gtm is not for you.

Pdk transmission is astounding. Gtm- you better be a good driver. Porsche PSM is idiot proof. Over cook a corner or lift at the wrong time an the car makes you look like a hero instead of a looser. GTM you better be a good driver.

The gtm is an awesome looking street car that stops traffic. In addition to that I think its a better development platform then any super car.

If I buy any other manufacturers car i throw away millions of dollars in development to make my super car into a track weapon. Switching out components that were designed to be middle of the road.

The gtm allows me to build it right the first time for a much lower cost.

I would love to see a comparison of the gtm to other production super cars. Clearly Gary's car impressed Ezra. Since we are conditioned to value the stats I would love to see a well built gen 2 gtm go head to head with the best a person can buy.

I think the value of a GTM would shine through.

Bingo! We have a winner! Great write up John!

Very well stated! I particularly like your comment on the fact that the GTM is an "Earned" achievement. However, I feel that there are two parts of the equation as far as GTM ownership. It's true that you develop a sense of pride as a result of the build process. But in my case, I had no idea at all what I was really building until I was allowed the opportunity to drive Allan Uzwiak's GTM in CT. That was the clarifying moment that brought everything into focus in terms of what it really means to build and own this car. So Ezra got a taste of what the GTM can do and what it's potential might be. But you're absolutely correct in saying that he doesn't know the car if he hasn't built one.

The only change that I would make to these statements would be to add "a well built Gen-I" into the whoop-*** session.

Just sayin'...
