Greetings from Greater Buffalo!
I've just put a Type 65 on my wish list, pending sale of my vintage Camaro, & I'd like to know if anyone has any info as to what kind of hoops I'd have to jump through to get a 65 registered in NY state. Would it be titled as a new vehicle, & if so, what about safety & emissions? Or would I use the title from my donor car? This inquiring mind needs to know before plunking down $20 large. Thanks!

Thanks, Rip.
Cheektowaga here. The 'Maro doesn't go on the market 'til I have my answers, & I've never been a Ford guy, but the 65 could change all that.

Registering in upstate is easy. Crate motors are ok it just has to have a minimum set of safety items. All the information is available and we have an advocate if Tom Noonan is still working in 'our' division in Albany.
Basically, you have to own all the parts with receipts and they have to not be stolen. (sounds easier than it is if you use a 20 year old engine, etc.) You finish the car, give all the data to Tom on a form, he sends you back a form you need to have the car inspected at one of the 'super state inspection places', I'm sure there's one in Buffalo. After that's done, they give you a form you take to the DMV, pay your taxes on the value of the parts and you get plates.
As states go (or parts of them because the downstate guys have more hoops), it's easy.
Welcome!!

So, basically, so long as I have the MSO from FFR, & the title to my 'donor car', I'm set. I know right where the inspection station is. My only remaining question is: How is it actually registered? As a 2012 prototype kit, or an '88-ish Mustang? My last dune buggy was easy: to my DMV, it was a '70 Beetle, because that was the donor.

Check your donor to make sure that the motor and tranny are the ones from it for the registration process................Steven

It will be registered as a 2012 custom built. No emissions issues upstate. The coupes do have some peculiarities with the plastic side windows and lack of provisions for bumpers. See the following threads from the "other" site:

What Steven writes above is the truth. You have to make sure that the engine and trans in your donor are the ones that are supposed to be in there OEM. Also, it's best if the donor was never stolen and recovered during it's life. If it was stolen, there needs to be proof that the engine / trans was recovered with it and again, they're the correct one for the car.
Worth making sure up front. They don't play around if they find that there is evidence that any of the parts are stolen. Other than that, it's easy. It will be registered as a (year finished) CUSTOM CONV. Mine is a "2006 CUSTO CONV" on the reg and title.

You will need bumpers, I talked to Tom Noonan about it months ago when I was going to get a coupe. Ended up with the roadster cause it was easier. Definaetly doable, though.

One guy added the bumper bar behind the front of the bonnet , just like new cars have behind thier bumpers. You put 2 bumper mounts like the shock absorber type and run the bumper bar across between them..............Viola!......front bumper and it doesn't show.......Steven
