101981019710196Went on a run today with a local group (http://www.socalsaac.org) and came upon a curve marked "15-MPH." The turn is just over the crest of a rise, drops and is off-camber. Turns out the locals also toss sand/gravel on the road for fun. Well, I was doing about 25 and lifted off the gas, the road went right HARD and dropped away. The car went straight and I applied literately just a little brake. Would have been fine if the sand wasn't there. One of the guys following me told me that I was "almost stopped" when the car went off the road. Once I realized that I wasn't going to stop, I just kept the car straight and brought it to a stop. Everything was okay with the car, drove it through the weeds to a dirt road and then back to the pavement. Only damage was a broken ground wire to the manual fan switch and that's been repaired. Lots of dust on the car but nothing else wrong.
My pride took a hit but I learned a valuable lesson at a very cheap price. and, when San Diego County Roads signs a curve at 15-mph....believe them!!
Here are some shots (taken after I dusted off the car) from the Mt. Palomar Observatory.
