View Full Version : Any thoughts on air conditioning in the coupe?

I know the track version is first but has there been any talk about AC in the coupe or targa? I already have a Roadster, live in hot and humid SC, and no air conditioning would be a deal breaker for me :)

Let me go out on a limb and say AC will be possible. Not sure if it will be offered as a standard option, and even if it is, Im not sure how much of donor AC it would reuse, if any. But certainly aftermarket (VintageAir, etc) will be possible. There is so little cabin area to cool, so it shouldn't take much to cool.

I believe the '33 and the GTM have the aftermarket unit designed in. However, it would be MUCH better if we can reuse the Subie stuff and save a big chunk of cash. The one problem is going to be the lines. Those will have to be replaced since we are now going from the back of the car to the front.

Even if FFR offers an aftermarket option, I anticiapte that someone will find a creative way to either reuse the Subie stuff or donor stuff from another (perhaps smaller) car, that we can find cheap at scrap yards. That will take more fab, more time and effort, but probably be a lot cheaper.
So there will likely be solutions for everyone.

I would like to know if there is a 12 volt electric compressor out there, possibly from a hybrid or a car equipped start-stop. The reason is that I envision having the compressor, condenser coil, blower and evaporator all in the front of the vehicle. I'm envisioning something built as a package, so that you could disconnect the return and supply duct from the blower, disconnect electrical power and remove it all on track day, shedding maybe 60#. You wouldn't have to open the refrigeration loop or put in a shorter serpentine belt.
It's probably not possible, but worth considering.

I thought someone posted a link to something like that in another thread.

I'm pretty sure the Prius has an electric compressor. Those will be about the most common.

Yeah, StatsGTR responded to a similar question I had in another thread.

man i wish i had a GTR..... lol, i swear it didn't say discontinued when i first looked, but i'm also sure there has to be another product out there that does the same job, i never looked that hard for the first link.
D'oh, sorry man I always read your handle as that for some reason. I didn't notice that wasn't it until you pointed it out :)

I would like the option to reuse the A/C from the donor car as well. It already has it, might as well give builders the option to incorporate it.
I, for one, would love A/C as my daily driver in the SF Bay Area turns into a toaster in the summer months.

I'm sure FFR will come up with something, either after release or before. I don't think they're going to leave it completely up the the end user to figure out how to implement a/c. I recall Dave mentioning something about A/C.

Mark Twain would disagree with you...
