View Full Version : What's inside our mufflers?

What WAS in mine seems to be burned out. My car is a good bit louder than when I began driving it. If I cut off the back end is there something in there that might slide out and be replaceable?

Brian,

Those are basically your good old glass pack mufflers. Best bet is to go with some of the other options that people have tried. They'll be more expensive, but Don Vaught proved a 65+HP increase when he changed to the mufflers that Carl Critz had designed.

A little off the subject, but I've seen some of the coupes running a single muffler on each side instead of the stock FFR set up. Any reason for this in particular?

Ted,

That's what Carl Critz had originally designed for His Coupe, with the help of Burns Stainless Steel.http://www.burnsstainless.com/ Carl had several conversations with Burns, and they determined that the headers, as bad as they look from Hooker, are really very good, in flow and construction. They determined, that using a single 4" tube would meet the sound levels they needed, and it was less expensive that doing two 3" tubes, and retain the "Original" look.

Don Vaught used the same platform, and showed a 60+ HP increase over stack mufflers, verifying what Carl and Burns had determined.

Thank you for the link, Hank. Does anyone have some photos of these on a completed car for me to get a better look at, or maybe a sound clip?

Ted,

This link shows several pics of Andy & Karen Salvaggio's coupe with the single muffler.

I helped Andy and Karen get that system built - inspired by Don's. It was built by Raptor Racing in Fresno, and he made jigs off of it so he can build more without having to have the car. The sound level dropped by quite a bit, power went up noticeably, and the build quality is top-notch. It is also rebuildable, so it can be re-packed if it starts to deteriorate over time (which all packed mufflers will do)

If you want to contact them, PM me and I can get you their info.

Hello John,

Any idea what they charge to build these? Looking into several options, appreciate the help!
