Since I got my MkIV base kit without the body cutouts, I have been doing that over the past few weeks. Turns out to be pretty easy. Using the template in the manual, I cut the hole for the fuel filler cap and was going to go ahead and drill the holes for the attaching screws when I started to wonder if there was a right/wrong or best/better position for the cap. Looking at a few pics, I see that most mount the cap so the lid flips opens towards the trunk but did see some where the lid flips open in line with the fender. I set the cap in place and rotated it around and flipped open the cap and it seems that it works fine in any position.

Any thoughts or problems that have popped up later?

Many thanks!

I aligned the tab with the body,. Don't know why, just seemed like the thing to do. But, like was said before, your choice.
