Keep a wide tip sharpie and when you trim the carpet, darken the edge. Also, take a look at where you'll have seams, spray a stripe of black paint. That way when the carpet doesn't exactly match up, you won't be able to see it.

X2 on the black paint in areas where two pieces join together so that you won't see a "shiner" if there is a bit of a gap.

If you haven't already permanently attached it I like to leave the LH side panel of the driver's footbox off until after you've done the floor and other two sides to allow better access for working around the pedals.
Good luck,

Some areas such as the footboxes, I found it easier to mock it up with a piece of cardboard and the using it trim the carpet.

The carpet on my mkIV did not need much trimmimng (less than I expected) and in some places I found it easier to trim after I had stuck the carpet down. Change razor blades often.
I made the tranny tunnel cover removeable, so I had a trim shop sew a border on the the tranny tunnel carpet. Then I glued it to the top and used strips of velcro on the sides and bottom edge. Lift up the sides to remove the screws to the al panel.
