Seems I have grenaded 3rd gear...
I have to remove a T5 transmission from my MK3.1 model roadster. Same question as I saw posted regarding a tremec...can the T5 be removed from a MK3.1 without the 5.0l motor? or is a motor/transmission removal required? Interior is complete. Was a short first drive after paint...
Thanks for any ideas / thoughts...

Ron,
That sucks! Yes it can be done without messing up your interior. Here is the instructions I followed:

Good luck! I did jack the engine up a bit to remove the transmission at the end.

One clarification: it depends on the bellhousing you have. Stock or Quicktime should be do-able. It is a bit of a pain but it can be done. Lakewood is pretty hard and if you (like me) "dial in" your bellhousing to ensure it is perfectly centered I would have to say that it is almost impossible.
The process looks like this (assuming the car is up on jack's):
1) remove the shifter - you will need the room
2) drain all the fluid
3) place a block under the engine to keep it from tilting
4) remove the drive shaft
5) place a rolling floor jack under the transmssion and jack it up enough that you can remove the mounting bracket.
5) remove the transmission bracket
6) undo the 4 bolts holding the transmission in place. The top one on the passengers side can be a little difficult to get to but it can be done.
7) using the rolling jack, pull the transmission back about 1 foot
8) from the top, grab the front shaft of the tranny and spin the assembly towards the passenger side (90 degrees)
9) pull the transmission back until it clears the bellhousing and angle it downwards until it slides free.
You may have to jack the engine up a little to get it to clear.
The problem with the Lakewood bellhousing is that it doesn't taper towards the rear. It is almost round and is the same diameter at the front as it is at the rear. This means that you cant get the shaft past the bellhousing. An angled bellhousing like the stock one isn't too hard and I hear that the Quicktime is sloped enough that you can make it work. A trick I learned is to sling a rope or a packing sling around the tranny and have someone on top holding most of the weight by straddling the tranny tunnel.

Pat and Todd
Thanks for the input and information. I have a stock bell housing, and the transmission came out fairly easy. Followed the directions provided by Pat and in a 2.5 hour period the transmission was out. Now looking to rebuild it so that I do not have to do this again...
Thanks
