I've been paranoid about cracking my windshield so I decided to make brackets that attach to the top of the windshield frame. I used some left over 1/8 inch aluminum cut to shape and fastened with two screws that go into nuts that are slid into the top frame. I'm still trying to get them to adjust smoothly, but what do you think?

Jeff, I think that's a great idea! Looks good! If you are not running a top then you should not have to be concerned about removing them to get the top hoop in place.
If you are you could replace those panheads with a knurled thumb screw to slip them off quickly to get the top on in a hurry if needed.
AWESOME!

This is a clever alternative solution, albeit a bit bulky looking from above.

Looking good to me. On the adjusting smoothly thing. I wonder if the brackets are at a slight angle to accomodate the normal windshiels frame curvature. Try to look from the side of the car at the two bolts and try to see if they seem to be in line and parallel w/ each other. If they aren't the visor won't move properly. If not look at the two brackets and see if swapping them might help. Good luck
