Just took delivery of a 2012 VW Passat TDI (diesel) 6 spd manual last thursday. I did a 400 mile round-trip over the weekend with it and averaged 53.3 mpg on two-lane roads with stop-and-go through small towns. Round-trip commute yesterday was 51.1 and that's mostly suburban driving of 34 miles each way. It's not 78 mpg, but still very impressive for such a large car.

The UK gallon is an imperial gallon and has 4.54 litres in it. so you are probably nearer 60 mpg with a UK gallon.
