View Full Version : PS Rack Inner Tie Rod Extension installation?

I just got through installing my Duralast '93 Mustang PS rack, and came across the PS rack inner extensions.
I have a Mk IV Roadster base kit, but I didn't see anything in the manual about installation instructions (currently at work, so I can't triple check).

I am guessing I need to remove the rack (now that I've got it nicely centered and calibrated lock to lock!), and remove the boots off of each end to gain access.
Is there a special tool for the boot clamp?
Any sneaky secret incantations I need to recite to get this to go together well (read "easily")?

TIA

The Mk4 Base kit manual talks about this process in the Steering Rack section. It is on page 150 in the copy I have at my desk. It will be right around there depending on which version you have.

The clip that holds the rubber boots on can be removed with a pair of pliers.

Let me know if you still can't find it. It is definately in there.

Kind regards,

Clearly I overlooked that part, and will check when I get home.
I have the complete kit manual on my computer here at work...

Thanks for the quick answer!

Chris,

Were you able to find it? If you still can't let me know and I'll find a way to get part of the manual on here. I will need the help of the web guy here because I couldn't figure out how to do it on my own.

Brian - I got everything apart last night. Yes, found that section. I needed to disassemble the rack from the chassis, as I couldn't get good access to unbolt the tie rod ends from the rack. Now my only problem is to find a 1.5" wrench to tighten the extenders! I don't have anything big enough, not even a crescent wrench.

Can your IT guy help you send me one to borrow tonight??? (just kidding)

My neighbor has a 6' tall rack of tools. He will likely have something I can borrow.

BTW - I assume lock-tite on both threads (rack to extender, extender to tie rod)?

There is no reason why you can't use lock-tite on those parts. I asked around here and a couple guys said they didn't use any on their cars. It is up to you.

I used red locktite since the inner tie rods had it on before I disassembled it

I just did mine this weekend. Put the rack in a bench vise for leverage. The factory boot clamps are usually single use. Pry the boot clamps off or just cut them with a wire cutter. My boots had only a narrow groove for a clamp so I chose to use CV boot clamps from AutoZone to replace the factory boot clamps because they are thinner than a water hose clamp and only a few bucks. I didn't have a combintation wrench big enough but did have a pipe wrench big enough........I KNOW.....I Know.....use the right tool. I was careful not to scratch up the outside surface so on future repairs I could get a combintation wrench on the ends. I used blue locktite just in case. THEN you get to reinstall the rack and start all over again on calibrating. :o

Installed my extenders on the rack last night in about 20 min. Just used hose clamps for the boots, as I had 2 handy that fit perfectly.
Now just need to reinstall and recalibrate the rack, and trim the inner tie rods per the procedure.

Thanks for the comments guys.
