I have come across this '55 with a 292V8 and automatic transmission. Appears to be a decent surivor car. At issue is that it is in need of a ring gear. The part is available but it looks like the gear is to be welded to the converter.
Has anyone had any experience with this particular issue? Remove engine or transmission?
Also, I have no idea what automatic transmission Ford installed in the year car. Would this be an FMX?

Any help or direction to some sights that can help me would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Nope, FMX came out in 1968

That Tbird will have a fordomatic if it's all original.

The ring gear for the flywheel is available (http://macsautoparts.com/ford-thunderbird-flywheel-ring-gear-146-teeth-manual-overdrive-transmission-eaa-6384-a/camid/THU/cp/JS0R3CHL1115784/)

Dennis Carpenter Ford also carries them (http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000024a~Z5Z5Z5832~P4 0.00~~~~S3H00MLMD476810707824l~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z5000002 4A) but he's proud of his LOL

I have never installed a ring gear like this so someone else will have to help you there. Looks like it's probably pressed on.
