Does anybody know how the CT DMV defines an engine year? In this state the "composite" motor vehicle has to have emmisons controls from the year of the donor motor. But this raises a question about how they define that year cause i can bolt heads from 1966 289 on to a 1985 302 or vise versa, it also raises the question on aftermarket blocks not having date codes that would identify them as parts intended for an early model year and so forth. Any help with this would be very appreciated cause I need to get a motor going soon my coupe is going to be here very fast and need to start on a block. I got lucky and there was a slot at FFR when I placed my order, someone had cancelled there's. I was expecting to have to wait like most people.

Good to hear that another coupe will be born in CT! I can't speak from experience because my coupe had already been registered in California and I luckily managed to shortcut the process in Hamden as opposed to having to do the full blown exam in Weathersfield. I am not a lawyer either but my read of the following excerpt from CT DMV website is that any engine purchased prior to 08/01/08 (when the emissions rules changed) is exempt from the onerous emissions requirements.

"Effective August 1, 2008 all composite vehicles (except motorcycles) presented for a composite inspection will be required to be equipped with the following emissions systems based on the year of manufacture of the engine used in construction.
Emissions controls must match the year of the engine used in the composite vehicle. Documented proof of engine year must be provided by the applicant. This information will be verified for accuracy and the presence of all required components will be verified during the inspection.

Note: This requirement will not apply to vehicles with engines purchased prior to August 1, 2008. Documented proof of engine year and purchase date must still be provided at time of inspection."

I hope for your sake that I am reading this correctly!

I have not purchased the engine, I will be stuck under the after 8-1-2008 law change. But I do have a 1969 351w block available to me from a salvage yard that would have the correct recipt for the engine year and vin of the car it came from hopfully that is what they need. It will be easy to meet the 1967-1970 emissions equipment standard, its only pvc and variable advance distributor. Just wish I could use a better block.
