Gentlemen.

I just bought myself some cool 10.5 x 17 halibrands from a bro here on the forum. I'm running a stock 4-link rear with stock mustang shocks. When I attach the new wheels, I notice the quad shocks rubbing on the driver side rear wheel. What options are there to fix this? Here's my guess:

1) Remove the quads? <-- Ride hop issues?
2) Add a 1/2" spacer to both wheels? <-- Will the wheel then rub against inside body?
3) Switch to IRS? <-- Too expensive.
4) Other options?

The photo below shows passenger side... rub is more severe on driver side.

Thank you.

Remove quad shocks, relocate 4 link to lower upper holes. Done, Richard.

Richard, I can certainly remove the quads... but what about ride hop concerns?

Not exactly sure what you mean by relocating 4-link to "lower upper holes". I don't see anything obvious when I go out and look. Photos?

What about the spacer idea? I kind of like the idea of keeping the quads if possible.

I believe Richard is referring to where the upper control arms attach to the frame. There are three holes to choose from. I don't recall which holes mine are in, but I'm running the same exact setup as you, although I am running a 3/8" spacer. I've had no issues with rubbing at all, and I've been on the road 8 years now.

If you are still running the stock Mustang coil springs and shocks this may be a good time to upgrade to coil-overs. Really no need for the quad shock in my opinion.

Frank - I am resisting the temptation to upgrade... because I have all these donor parts now and damn it, gonna use them (to justify the 6 months spent in tear down). :)

Richard - found the holes you are referring to in upper control arm attach point. I'll need to drill the hole on one side (not sure why FFR only drilled the one hole).

Rob - I presume you left the quads in, yes? Most in this thread are recommending to remove quads. Since you have the same setup I have, what did you do with your quads? Also, where did you get your spacer? Looking for product recommend.

You do not need the quad shocks, your maual should tell you what hole to choose based on est/act.. horsepower. consult your manual......Steven

X2 on this recommendation. I ran the donor springs w/perches, shocks & quadshocks for a year and was unhappy with it - bouncing with alot of suspension travel. I bought the rear FFR Konis from a forum member and the difference is amazing. But if you feel you must try the donor setup, for future reference, the conversion was very easy on the finished car.

Jake, I must have missed the picture the first time around. Looks like you can just turn the quad shock around, end for end and gain a little bit of clearance. It's worth a try.

All good comments.

I'll give a go at reversing the quads and add a 3/8" spacer. If anyone has a wheel spacer size/product recommend, shout it out. I have the 5-lug conversion kit from Forte's.

Also, just bought some Kumo Ecstas on Tire Rack (315x35R17 & 255x40R17). I'll post pics when I've got them mounted.

Sorry, I must have misread. I am using the VPM coil overs. I would highly recommend removing the mustang springs and tossing them in the garbage. Yes, I am running the quads. I tried it without, but got too much wheel hop. I bought my spacers at pep boys.

Well, I bought some tires @tirerack.com and had them mounted @Sears for $80 bucks. Finally found the coil spring perches from FFR (in a box labeled, "box 16" which I wasn't expecting). Mounted them and now posting pics like I promised. For those who have the 4-link, there's also a shot of the spring perch, quad shock & standard shock.

Frank : Thanks for the tip about reversing the quad shocks. I've done that and gained a couple mm's.

No rub (but only 1/4" clearance on driver's side between wheel & quad shock). I believe I need a spacer.

John,

You scored on those wheels my friend! You will be fine without a spacer, keep up the progress and the updates!
