i bought this car for $5000 - it needed timing belt / water pump service - detailed, new tires and exhaust - all is done..

i am about $6400 into it ....

A good car friend of mine was telling me about this 818 thing when i mentioned to him that i strayed from my typical GERMAN VW / AUDI / BMW car for my daily....

i checked out the site , googled and read - and i told my friend -

Thank you - i am now driving my 818 donor car ( unless i find one that before then for cheaper )

I have build / finished building a few porsche speedster replica's ( wife hated them all )

I am very excited for this car...

it is my mid-life 40 - b-day present to myself ( hopefully its released semi- on time next year as my 40th is July 2014 )

here is my last speedster

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u203/vwsnaps/speedster.jpg

Anyways - im sure everyone will be seeing my screen name alot in the next few years.....

this is my first subaru - i like it - i also part out vw's / audi's - so i am going to watch local salvage auctions for WRX's

I was a little concerned as i saw a post stating the differences in WAGON control arms and stuff.... i guess a small hurdle to jump when the race starts......

That's a pretty outrageous buy you got. I think you are in that ballpark dollarwise where you offset the cost of the donor vehicle with the useage of a daily driver and then still have the ability to part out the car for additional savings. At $5000 initial investment, you hit that magic donor number to keep the budget around 15k. You will obviously do better than that. Plus you can't even cost out the fun you will have driving the WRX (priceless!). Again, congratulations on the great deal!! WEK.

What was it about the Speedster's that your wife did not like?

What is it about the FFR 818 that you think your wife will like?

Welcome to the forum, I like both of the cars you posted.

Death trap ( according to her ) and very bouncy..

Kids are older now so a 818 would be ok , if not - she can deal with it...

She also hated the miata - pretty much any 2 door - 2 seater..

She didnt mind the Porsche 911

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u203/vwsnaps/my911.jpg

Loved the M3 ( except the back to back speeding tickets )

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u203/vwsnaps/m3x.jpg

So i traded the M3 and The 20th GTI

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u203/vwsnaps/gti.jpg

For a 2006 X3

Which we actually had for almost 3 years ( record ) then bought 2011 Jetta.

VWsnaps, did you read that eventually FFR will offer a high MPG version of 818? And that it will use VW TDi drivetrain? This implies other VW drivetrains, that use the same mounting points, could also bolt in, not sure but I'm thinking that would include 1.8T/2.0T (guessing you will know which ones have same mounting).

Being a VW guy, thought you might be interested in that info. While the plan is an aero body to go with the TDi power, to get best mileage, there is no reason to think the alternate drievtrain mounting points will be married to the aero body. So mix 'n match seems likely. With this setup you'd still use Subie everything else, so with VW its no longer single donor.

Perhaps the drivetrain mounts will always be bolt-on (choose WRX vs choose TDi = FFR delivers that bolt-on subframe), which would allow builder to easily fab their own mounts for other drivetrains as well (would support other vendors selling specifc mounts, etc)

I believe that it's a restriction that applies only to very new forum members, for maintaining security and civility issues. Once you get 10 or 20 posts under your belt without creating controversy, I think you will find that the restriction goes away. Welcome aboard.

post count still too low. Tell us more about which VW power plants share the same mounting points as the TDi (and therefore could potentially fit in the 818)

Depending on year.. The tdi motors will fit in any 1978+. The moved the mounts around a little between platforms. Mk1,mk2,mk3,mk4. Etc. But there are companies that make modified motor mounts..

The 1.8t motors and probably the 2.0t share the same mounting.. The 1.8t early 1997-1999 aeb Code engines are used in older vw's as swaps because they are drive by cable.. 1999+ are drive by wire..

My car 1985 vw golf has 1998 vr6 6 cylinder swap which still uses. Throttle cable.

On the get together PCA cruises, the women tend to cluster together during the pre-event sign-in and share the Advil they brought. My wife tells me they all get sore during the ride out in the country on the winding roads.

A bouncy or stiff ride is simply translated into; why do I feel the road in this car? The typically male drivers love the feel and feedback, the women don't, at least not as passengers.

I'm sure your year 911 was more refined than the Speedster Replica (ride wise), but I'd get over it in a hurry, not sure about my wife.

I've been the passenger in a real Speedster once, it did feel more vulnerable, and perhaps lower than my own 911. Amazing how fun the car was to be in with just normal suburban driving, and at the speed limit. That tossable feeling was a delight to me, but I can see it being unnerving to some.

Hello I am new to the Forum ...I am a Audi / Volkswagen Technician. It would be nice to be able to put a diesel into a light weight body. The new diesels is not as fuel efficient as the older diesel cars. The only concern is that buying a diesel car for a donor is not cheap.

The 1.8 Turbo (gasoline ) will be a good engine. I would advise replacing the oil pickup tube since the 1.8T engine have a problem with sludge. BUT IT IS A GOOD ENGINE. I would also replace the turbo oil feed line and all the vacuum lines . Change the oil with Synthetic oil every 4 to 5000 miles and the engine will last a long time.....

The 2.0 Turbo (gasoline) BPY engine form 2005 to 2009 is junk... they have a problem with the crankcase breather valve.... and like to use oil ( I see a lot of 2.0T (gasoline) engines that is 2 quarts or more low on oil at around 5000 miles since the last oil change the engine holds 4.8 quarts of oil... I know it sounds like I just have bad things to say about the Audi / Volkswagen engines ...however I do think that if you take good care of the engines it will last a long time....

The 1.9 Turbo diesel is a very good engine the only thing that go wrong with them is the glow plugs and the glow plug wire harness. The EGR valve and the intake manifold will get plugged over time but it is not hard to replace.

Welcome to the forum...
I'm also a VW lover. What kit is the Speedster? Any advise on these as I would eventually like to add one to my garage.
Thanks
