Posted a picture of my engine in another thread, in response to a question about alternator mounting location, and another forum member commented about the large pulley on my water pump. This has made me do a little research and ask questions...

All the pulleys were on the engine when I bought it, and I never questioned whether they were the right diameter or not. Did a complete overhaul, and put the same pulleys back on. Given all the issues and strange parts with this engine, wouldn't surprised me in the least if this isn't right either.

I've driven the car just under 500 miles since finishing my build last fall. While no overheating issues so far, haven't seen much hot weather yet. I'm using a 192 degree thermostat, and the engine temp is usually 190 - 200. I'm using a Painless 195°F on / 185°F off fan control thermostat. The fan switches on and off at these temps they way it's supposed to. Occasionally though, like when sitting at a light for several minutes, I do see the temp creep up to 210/215/220, but then drops back down pretty quickly when I take off again. Now I'm thinking this might be because I have the wrong water pump pulley, and I might really have problems in actual summer temps.

Just measured everything:
Crank pulley = 5.45 inches
Alternator = 3.50 inches
Water pump = 6.75 inches

In checking, seems like usually a 6.00 or 6.25 water pump pulley is normally used with a 302. The 6.75 looks like it's for a 390/427/428. I am using an Edelbrock 8843 Victor Series water pump, which is supposedly higher flow than stock.

What say ye?

I have an original (FoMoCo stamped) water pump pulley on my engine - it's from a '68 302, I think, and it's right about 6" or just a bit less.
