View Full Version : Belt Routing

I am in the midst of my new engine build up and I'm making some changes. Biggest changes being ditching the 94/95 front dress, adding power steering and changing to standard rotation water pump. I'd like to see how everyone ended up running their serpentine belt. I'm really hoping to see a couple with clockwise (standard rotation) water pump with power steering and the alternator of course. So post up the pictures if you have them. Any details of the pulleys you used and any bracketry would help as well. Thanks, Frank

Pretty sure you need a reverse pump with a 4 pulley system. 3 pulleys work well with a standard rotaion.

Hey Frank,
I have to agree with Mike. I've never seen a 4 pulley system that turns the waterpump clockwise (standard rotation) with a single serpentine belt but that's not to say that there might not be something out there. If you turn it up please let us know.
I've done the counterclockwise (reverse) rotation pump two different ways. On my Mk3 I used a Ford Racing AC eliminator kit to move the PS up out of the way of the steering shaft. I then made my own alternator bracket and ran the belt in a "V" configuration:

To answer the inevitible question---it sees 6,000+ RPM regularly and in 12K miles there have been no issues with belt slip or squeel.
On the Mk4 I used alternator & power steering brackets from CFR PERFORMANCE (http://www.cfrperformance.com/BRACKETS_s/4762.htm) and routed the belt to cross over the top:

Either one of these could also use the belt routing shown in the other. I'm not a fan of underdrive pulleys so both of these got OEM Ford parts on the crank and water pump.
Good luck,
Jeff

Thanks guys, I was afraid of that. Doing my research I kept coming up against the same stumbling block. I have to do this in stages, I just can't spend without feeling guilty. The construction industry if still questionable, regardless of how busy we are right now. I currently have reverse (CCW) rotation on the car but with 94/95 front dress. The plan is to get the new motor in the car and back in running condition and then add the power steering as I can loosen the grip on the wallet. I just can't find a way, yet, to do CCW with the three pulley without belt slip, inexpensively (Currently running a 3 pulley system on the car (CCW) and belt slip is pretty common). Then change to a 4 pulley as a permanent solution. Guess I have to keep trying. Maybe set up a idler pulley in place of the PS pump and then change out later. The other issue I am going to have is that I HAVE TO mount the PS pump low on the driver side as to not interfere with the under hood fuse box. This is the main reason the car didn't get power steering from the beginning. By all means keep the suggestions coming though, I do appreciate them.

Guess I could do something like this. I know I have seen something similar on 90's Crown Vics and such full size Ford's. Bet I could find a double pulley for the crank at the Pick-A Part.

When i got my MkI it was set up like jeff's second pic but w/o the ps pump. The original owner had made an idler pulley that put the pulley right under where the red coil is. it was a simple piece of 1/4 or 3/8 aluminim in a triangle shape. It had two holes so it bolted on top of two of the water pump bolts in that area. He just found longer bolts. The third hole had the pulley bolted into it. If you go to an auto parts store and just ask for a serpentine belt idler pulley, they will probably have 3-4 to choose from.HTH Edit: I just had another idea. Go here

and look at his setup although i wouldn't run the belt that way. Breeze sells the bracket as a seperate item. So get his bracket, mount you idler pulley to it w/spacers as needed. Then, when you decide to do PS just ask Mark to sell you his kit minus the bracket.

Frank, I've got a new grooved pulley and hardware. You'll need to fab up a bracket to mount it on kind of like Craig is describing. Heck, I've even got a new serpentine belt. Since you'll be working with a blank canvas maybe you can locate the idler to be able to utilize this belt. PM an address and I'll send it all your way.

The pulley and shaft I've got is like in Brian's photo. Seeing that made the light bulb above my head come on---I've still got the original donor engine accessory mounting plate. For setting up a budget idler system it could be cut down to get rid of the upper section (somewhere in the area of the red line) then have the pulley mounted to it similar to Brians (the purple circle). The belt could be routed to either cross over the top (green) or in the "V" (blue) configuration. Sorry about the crude markup but you get the idea :p

If you want me to box this stuff up and send it your way so you can play around with it just say the word Frank.

I appreciate it Jeff, I really do. However I already have the water pump, timing cover and the grooved pulley. I should have kept you in the loop but been a little distracted the last few days. Powerdyne sells an add on crank pulley that works in conjunction with the stock serp. pulley. I have looked at that and it will most likely work. I'm thinking of mocking things up and maybe seeing if Glen can cut a couple brackets on his water jet for me. I think I may hit the junk yard on Sunday and see what I find there. I really like the look and the layout of the March setup I pictured above. It is a bit pricey but......................
Again Thanks Jeff.

Frank, look at the link in my post, not a March setup, and a lot less.

Rich, I did see it. Don't get me wrong, v-belts might be fine for many but I am not a fan of them. Really want to do a serp set-up. I do appreciate the help though.

Went to the local parts yard today and found a 1990 Lincoln Towncar with a double serpentine crank pulley. I went ahead and grabbed that, the water pump pulley and the P.S. pump and bracket. I think between all of the parts I got today and the ones I have already, I should be able to cobble something together that will be economical and work well. Pictures to follow and I will update this as I go along.
