View Full Version : Hood hinge mounts
I am working on fitting the hood to the car, the book says to use a couple of pop rivets to temporarilty hold the mounts in place and then drill them out for painting.
How do you get the pop rivets out of the hood?

Drill them back out...... mount the driver side mount in the middle of the pad and the pass side as far forward as you can. you may have to put a cressant notch in the front hinge arm on the pass side as sometimes it contacts the square tube before the hood is all the way down.
Got that, but part of the rivet is still between the hood pieces. How did you get it out?

Maybe it's too late, or this doesn't really help, but I never understood why it was necessary to temporarily install the hood hinge mounts. I sanded away the gelcoat where they contact the hood, and glued with HSRF and installed the rivets one time. Painted the hood with the brackets in place. They blend in and look nice and clean. No downside that I can think of.
You can see them clearly in this picture, especially if you expand to full size. Did the same for the gas hood lift mounts (visible at the top of the picture) and the gas lift mounts on the underside of the trunk lid.

One other note -- I didn't finalize their location until I fit the body, fit the hood, and had the hinges roughly in the middle of their adjustment. Then checked the location of the brackets from the underside. The pre-drilled holes were OK on one side, but quite a bit off on the other. Perhaps this is what j.miller was talking about. I just don't remember which side it was. No issues with the hinge arms hitting the radiator square tube based on the final location of my hinges.

Or you can do the opposite and not install the hood hinge until after you've painted the car. That's what I did.

That is correct. They rattle around like balls in pinball machine when you move the hood around in the garage. After paint and mounted, you will never hear them but they will still be in there. Just part of the build.
Thx for the input and the ideas, that helps a great deal.
