Shock orientation

I am trying to understand the proper shock orientation. I am building a MK4 with IRS and red KONI shocks. From the manual, I've determined that the body of the shock goes up in the front and down in the rear. But why? Is this to make ride height adjustment easier?

Red Koni's can be either body up or down. Doesn't matter to the shock. Typically oriented to provide the best clearance to other suspension components. Access to the ride height adjustment collars is a consideration too I guess. But I haven't noticed much difference whether at the top of bottom of the coilover assembly.

My MkIV has the old T-bird based, pin-drive width (narrower), IRS. In my case, the spring hat would hit the lower control arm mounted body up, so I had to mount the shock body down. This gave additional clearance where the shock mounted to the LCA.
