View Full Version : Gas Tank Install

Hello Gents,

I am installing my gas tank and have a couple of questions;

1. I'm assuming ( maybe incorrectly) that the retaining bracket goes between the two beads on the filler tube. What's the secret to getting the retaining bracket past the bead?
2. While researching the retaining bracket install I read in a 2023 post recommending replacing the filler neck gasket with a Ford part, the reasoning was that the FFR gasket frequently leaked and was prone to tearing, is this still the recommendation or has the quality improved for the FFR gasket?
3. I used shrink wrap on the wires of the sending unit. I saw a you tube video that recommended shrink wrap and afterward thought about whether it will hold up to gasoline. Should I remove the shrink wrap or leave it?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Mike

I'll try...

1. Not sure I follow. Mine isn't between the beads, that's for the gasket.
2. Get the Ford part, FFR is prone to leak. You can feel the quality difference.
3. Not sure on the longevity of the shrink wrap, I wouldn't use it. I used solder shrink sleeves that are rated for fuel

Thanks M22...there are 2 beads on the pipe, one at the top and one 4-1/2 inches in from the end that goes into the gasket and tank. Does the bracket go between those beads or does it go between the gasket and the bead?

I was able to manipulate the bracket over the lower bead. I think there is a picture in the build manual that shows this.

You can see in this picture, if you zoom in.

Bracket goes on the outside of the beads to keep the filler tube from pulling out.

Yeah sorry, it never really was an issue on my build so its hard to remember. I think I went over the top. Maybe I just got lucky for once!

I don't see how I can get it over the bead, I'll have to open it up a little with a file.

Thanks everyone

Go over the top of the pipe

I thought the same. I even put it together without it over the bead and realized that wasn't right. It will go over, just not easily.

Thanks again everyone. I'll get it over the bead, just wanted to make sure it was the right thing to do. Also, just ordered the Ford Gasket. Now just have time to fix the sending unit wiring and I'll be ready to install the tank.

On the advice of others here I got the Ford gasket from Breeze along with some other parts I wanted.
On my Mk5 I couldn't get the tank straps close enough to reach with the provided bolts so I got some longer ones at the hardware store the same grade, I think I got them 3/4 inch longer. Not sure if it's a normal thing but my friends who built Mk4's said they used longer bolts too.

Ha! It's been "normal" since the days of Mk1s :D Once you get the straps "extruded" into shape by pulling them up tight using longer bolts you can change to the shorter ones if you like. Or not! ;)

I thought I was doing something wrong and I texted my local FF builder friends and they all replied "yeah we just got longer bolts.'
I didn't go crazy long with the bolts, I just measured what I was going to need to get the nuts started so I'm just going to leave them.

What made that part of the installation pretty much easy, was just using the plastic cover to bend the straps to the correct shape. Once I did that, the tank/cover went up into place and the bolts went through with plenty of room to thread the nut on.
