Have about 450 miles on my Mark IV build. The tail shaft seal has started to leak. Is this common with the TKX transmission? I see post where the plug was jammed into the seal by the shipper, but don’t see much on other leak issues. Forte shipped my engine/transmission and he does a good job packaging the assembly so no plug issues. I used 3/4 spacers to get the correct drive line angle and there is no vibration or drive line chatter when car is driven. I see no runout on the drive line when operating with the transmission tunnel cover removed. I am going to replace the seal. Does the driveline need to be marked so it goes back with the same orientation? Can I use an oil seal puller to get the seal out? Any other tools that will help pull the seal with out damaging the bearing race? Any issues to look out for when inspecting the seal being removed. My mileage seems very low to have a transmission seal leak, any assembly mistakes I could have made to cause an early failure? I was careful to not gouge the seals insides. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Ross

Hard to say but shouldn't have failed under normal circumstances that early. Maybe the seal was bad from jump? Did you use any lube when inserting the yoke? I've pulled a couple of those seals and had no issues using a garden variety seal puller, just make sure you angle the puller correctly and don't scratch the inside of the housing. I reinstalled with a 2" PVC coupling. You could mark the driveline so that you are not fighting with spline alignment when you reinstall.

Thanks for the replyCV2065! Didn’t think to use a lube on shaft insert. I looked at your build thread it was helpful. Guess I will put a new seal in and hope for the best. What lube would you use, white lithium grease or a specialized lube

I put a really thin coat of transmission fluid.

The other thing my seal does not leak when sitting still, only leaks when driving and shifting. Could the transmission vent be stopped up?
