I'm new so forgive me if this is a duplicate. I tried a search but only got voluminous irrelevant hits.

Has anyone done alternate dashboard coverings. The foam backed vinyl isn't doing it for me, and i was too cheap for the real carbon fiber. 3M has a couple decent possibilities. Yes I know they aren't period. If this was a real AC Cobra you could call it blasphemy. :-)

- 3M simulated graphite
- 3M real wood walnut venire
- ???

Take a look at hydro dipping. They offer pretty much anything you can imagine. Here are some wood grain prints.

At one point I was investigating flocking the main dash with my 3 metal panel setup, then looking into suede. Eventually decided and stayed with the FFR material. It still looked nice with my setup. Problem with flock would be it could only be cleaned with air gun or a brush, suede has its own issues but would look nice.

All of the above have been done, a friend did wood veneer on his.
Try your hand at what ever you think you'll like. If it doesn't turn out ok, just re-do it

Thanks for the above replies and anything that follows. I'll follow up on all ideas. However, don't expect to see the end result anytime soon. I got my mk5 1 week ago. :-)

I think the most recent thread on dash coverings is https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?52868-Finishing-your-roadster-dash-but-not-with-the-kit-s-vinyl.

My responses in that thread:
I used 3M's 1080 vinyl wrap https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058DIDTY?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_ti tle_1.

It's holding up really well.

... I just used the 5' length, and left a few inches bare on either side. Because the aluminum rolls back, the bare ends can't be seen. I had trim a handful of inches off the right side of the dash to get proper fit anyway, and that helped minimize what is left uncovered. Unless something has changed, you'll probably be trimming as well...

Just remember whatever you use, make sure it's resistant to the elements (sun, rain, etc).

I did the crinkle powder coat and I am very happy with the look. It's super tough and cleans up easily. More importantly it looks great, remindss me of a vintage warbird panel.
