Hey, there’s no MK5 Roadster sitting in the garage yet because it ain’t shipped yet. In the meantime I’m making body bucks (yes two as there will be two cars being built together), chassis dollies, getting some of the tools we don’t have like Cleco fasteners. Just finished the first body buck and was curious as to what it cost. Had some of the hardware on hand but really not that much. The most expensive item was the caster set, $76. Ordered 5” casters as there’s a bumpy and steep drive to navigate to get the bodies to the storage building. Anyway after adding up the receipts it worked out to $180/ea. Don’t know how this compares but figured I’d share the info.

I don't remember what mine cost, but I built it out of 2 sheets of 4x8' plywood and a handful of 2x4".
One sheet was cut in half to make the fore/aft vertical supports for the body. I basically made a platform on wheels. I also didn't use extra large casters. Mine were maybe 3" from Lowes.
I'm guessing mine was around $100, but that was also lumber costs from 2019.
I ended up giving mine away to a guy who was local, also building a roadster.
If you're lucky, you might find someone around your area who is done w/ their build and looking to unload theirs for free/cheap.

For my dolly I used some new 2”x6” in a simple T pattern, sandwiched to provide height and heft. Mounted on 8” casters purchased used off Marketplace for $20.226716226717
The body buck was a single sheet of plywood connected with 2x4 to make a platform for holding boxes of parts

Thanks for this. I have assumed dollies will be needed as there are two builds taking place in the same garage at the same time. Until it is known just what the best positioning for the two cars will be it would be nice to be able to easily move them around before they go up on the jack stands. I may be over thinking this as the chassis minus the body which will be on the buck should be easy enough to reposition before we start hanging parts
I do however like the simplicity of your 2x6 sandwich dolly, thanks for the photo it helps.

FFR literally sits them in the grsss next to the fiberglass mold building… no real need for a body buck..

FFR literally sits them in the grsss next to the fiberglass mold building… no real need for a body buck.. maybe not needed for structural stability, but for those of us who may need to move it around or can not store it outside, it’s handy to have it on a framework with casters.

I am looking to build one, and while dolly dimensions seem straightofrward, how do you measure for the curves on your body buck? Is there a blueprint I could use?

The curves do not have to be perfect. I measured all straight parts and just joined the curved points as best I could. I used a compass to draw out the curves. Once you have everything cut out, you're going to put foam pipe wrap on it anyway. Besides, the underneath of these bodies are far from perfect.

There is a pattern in my MK3 manual. I'm guessing it's the same for the other manuals.

Makes sense, thank you. Let me check the manual they have online.

I bought a $12 furniture dolly rated for 800lbs at Home Depot and ripped the casters off that. Bought a 3/4” plywood for maybe $30-$40 and a few 2x4s. Stole a pool noodle from the kids for a cushion on top of the plywood. Under $75 for the whole thing.
