View Full Version : Heater Hoses and Heater Control Valve

I have a blueprint engine, small block Ford and the vintage air heater and defrost unit.
Instructions say to connect the heater hose from the intake manifold to the left outlet on the heater. I assume that means the drivers side outlet. Just want to make sure I have the correct orientation.
After I confirm that, which heater hose line gets the heater control valve install installed into it.
Any input appreciated.

Pretty sure that's what I did.

?? What did you do?

The control valve goes on the feed (hot) hose leading to the heater core. This cuts off the hot water to prevent introducing unwanted heat to the interior in warmer times.
In my case with a Vintage Air heater system, this heater hose attached to the pipe on the right (passenger) side of the core.

The feed hose is the one connected to the manifold, the return to the water pump

Some of us have used a 12v solenoid valve vs the manual FFR valve. On /off but fan controls amount of heat. This pic is from my old 302.

Here’s how I ran mine. Feed line from the manifold port behind the thermostat housing. The T in the port to allows for a temp sensor for the gauge on dash. The port on the drivers side that this sensor would normally go in was used for the Sniper ECT sensor. The coolant moves aft through a bypass block (this allows a small amount of coolant to flow continuously past the sensor for gauge accuracy) then to the heater temperature control valve and from there to the heater core. The return line comes out of the heater core back through the bypass block and to the water pump.
Would recommend using some kind of temperature control valve. Usually only pull the control out 1/4 to 1/2 inch before the air is too hot coming out of the heater vents even at the low fan speed.
Note most builders like to keep the manifold valley uncluttered and run the heater hoses out to the side and back to the heater. I ran them the way Ford did from the 1960s to 1995.

The heater doesn't care which way the hot water travels.

Mike generally you are correct, but some heaters have a restrictor on the outlet side to slow down the water through the core.

In my installation the heater was moved forward to allow for a 3 inch deep glovebox. This caused the inlet and outlet tubes to interfere with the valve cover. I had to cut the tubes off and solder elbows onto them.
The tubes are extremely thin walled and I would do whatever possible to avoid placing any strain on them.
