View Full Version : Update on my engine shutting down issue

Our problem now is once I start the engine it starts idling at 2k. and the choke butterfly is closed and slowly opens to about 1/4 in. It runs for another few minutes and the idling slowly deteriorates . and the motor stops. It doesn't usually start right after it stops. Maybe 5 or 10 minutes later it will start and goes through the same routine. Before the engine shuts off , it I lightly tap the accelerator trying to make the rpm drop , but the engine shuts down. I am starting to think the carburetor is not supporting the fuel flow to keep it idling. Turning the idle screw down doesn't seem to effect the rpm but will shut the engine off. We have a brand new 302 blueprint engine with a cam. and of course and a 600 Holley carb. I don't have a vacuum problem as I can blow through the vent hose and hear it in the tank.
As I fix one thing something else happens.

Thanks for any help

I also have a BluePrint 302 with the Holley 600 cfm carb. It sounds to me like you're running out of fuel.

When your engine stalls/shuts down, I'd recommend removing the sight plug on your primary float bowl to see if it has fuel or if it's dry. If it's dry, then you may have a bad fuel pump or dirty fuel filter. FYI, there's a small screen/filter on the inlet of the primary fuel bowl. You may want to take a peek at it to see if it's clogged.

Sounds to me like the choke isn't opening, either because it is not getting power or because it is misadjusted.

I am very suspicious of all these problems you are having with a brand new engine that was from Blueprint . First it was a fuel pump , then a coil, then a distributor, and now carb issues?? I am wondering if there is something being missed that could be related to installing the engine and assembly between the engine and the car components ? Or is there anything that has to be done with Blueprint engines after they are shipped and before they are installed. There are way to many components being replaced for a brand new engine that was dynoed and shipped. Just thinking maybe things beyond the engine itself should be looked at. Thought i would put this out there, maybe we can stir up some ideas.

You are correct Jeff. The electric choke is not working . But this is not all the problems the carb. is having. The choke is not adjusting because the plastic adjusting knob is not connected to the linkage that controls the butterfly. Spoke to blueprint today and told them about all my starting problems that I mentioned above. Blueprint is sending me a new carburetor and I am sending the old one back. They are a 5 start company. Thanks for your reply.
I am thinking about getting a pressure regulator for my mechanical fuel pump with a return hose. Can you recommend one. I have a 600cfm Holley . A 4160.

Something like this would work. I have an Aeromotive couldn't find the one I use but it works well. Solved my pressure related problems.

You should run a return line of the same size or maybe one size smaller than your feed line. Too small and it will provide restriction and maybe a pressure increase.

Thanks Jim, don't like cutting a hole in tank after thinking more about the job. Starting to think plan B. Sounds like a very fast car. Good luck with the build.

I would expand on Jim's advice and install an intank electric pump. Pipe the pressure side to the regulator Jim referenced, out to the carb, and the return from the regulator back to the intank pump. Bulletproof system and a simple adjustment of the regulator makes it EFI compatible when you want to move into the 21st century.
