View Full Version : Trunk lid access panel
I can't believe I'm asking this because it seems so simple, but how did you mount the teardrop panel to the underside of the trunk lid? The fiberglass is very thin, so I second-guessed my assumption that screws would be just fine. Rivnuts seem like overkill and I wasn't sure if rivets would damage the fiberglass.

I used speed nuts around the perimeter of the opening.

Thanks Jim -- using those never occurred to me, but it's a perfect application.

I’ve used…and had cars that customers used rivnuts as well as simple rivets. Either works fine.

Thanks Jeff... I've never used either on fiberglass, so I wasn't sure.

Just sheet metal screws, not like they're holding any weight or stress.

You think this is overthinking? Hold my beer and I'll give you some real overthinking examples from my build.
In the meantime, I need to overthink paint colors....

Thanks. That part has been sitting in my trunk for 10 years. Will install it this week. :)

Dang. I guess mine will be JAC. Hah! I had a guy this summer ask me what color I was painting mine, and when I told him 'blue', he said something similar to your sentiment. I asked him what color HIS Cobra was. Turns out, he doesn't own one. :) Hey, at least it won't be powder blue with orange stripes! (Sorry Jesse...just teasing. Yours will look amazing!)

Greg, I'm not going to tell anyone what color they can or can't paint their build :p.. I just see SOOOO many blue cobra's, that I just sorta walk on past. Oh, by the way, the Subi is blue, but only because that was the only color I was able to find .

I hear you about walking on past...I pretty much do that with every car in every color at car shows. It seems like it's always the same set of cars...some Bel-Airs, some 68 Camaros and old Mustangs, a few Cobras...the same stuff over and over. I gave up on car shows altogether...just not interesting anymore. I just take mine for a drive on country back roads near my house for a half-hour on an occasional weekend day, then park it back in the shop. That's probably all I'll ever do with it. Wife won't ride in it (too loud and smelly), so it's just for hot laps out in the country. :)

I'm with you on the car shows. We have the Autorama here in Dallas every year and we've stopped going. The Goodguys at Texas motor Speedway can be good, usually about 3500 cars.
You're not that far from Tulsa, you should check out Starbird's show there. It's huge and has some very good cars every year.

I obtained a sheet of 2mm Carbon Fiber and cut a new panel. I transfered the holes from the panel to the fiberglass, drilled 3/16 holes and installed aircraft style tinnerman clips so I counld attach with #8 black oxide screws.

We released our new plastic trunk lid access cover a while back. We still sell the aluminum cover as well, for those of you that want to powder-coat or paint it the same color as your car or other aluminum panels. Both come with the hardware to install them.

Kind of embarrassed I didn't think of this. I ended up glueing flat nuts to the underside of the panel. Huge pain, not very secure. Basically the worst of all worlds.
This is much better.

OB6, dont be embarrassed—I didnt even know that piece existed! LOL. After seeing this thread, I looked all over my shop and couldnt find it. I could cut and bend one out of a sheet of aluminum…….but thanks to this thread, I might use some leftover CF veneer from my dash and tunnel cover projects. Or, get a plastic one from Frank. Cool!
