Just wondering what starter people are using.

I have a 427w SBF backed by a built AOD. (I know, but I have a gimpy left leg so a clutch is not going to happen). But I have been using a Jegs Prostarter Starter for Ford 289, 302, 351C & 351W

https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/10005/10002/-1

My issues are:

I have killed one, motor spins but solenoid stopped extending. (the good thing is there is a warranty so I am only out time.)

No matter which of the clocking positions I use I get that horrible screeching sound.

Because of the headers and the block, I can only use the three middle index positions, not all five.

I am getting shavings from my flexplate, no matter which index I use.

So, please let me know what works

I bought this one for my 427 SBF that Smeding is building.

I have a 164 tooth flexplate, so the starter must be compatible with that. I suspect that is the trouble I am having, the tech at Jegs said it was the correct one....but who knows. Jegs says it fits Automatic and 5 speed trans....can you see the skeptical face I have on?

I went out on a limb and bought a stock starter for FSB with AOD

Starter (Automatic Transmission) for Ford F150 92-98 4.2L 5.0L 5.8L F250 E150 E250, Thunderbird Mustang 90-04, Mercury Cougar 90-97, Marquis Colony Park 90-91, Lincoln Mark VII 90-92 5.0L, 410-14023

And wouldn't you know it. The mesh point was perfect. This one does not have the torque the other did, but it started the engine without any screeching.

Anyone want to buy a brand new Jegs Pro Start? Probably would work better on a manual trans. Make me an offer.

I'd send it back and Tell them you were misled by the listing and an employee (stick-shift trans is 157 tooth/ AOD has a 164.)
