View Full Version : Learning to drive my MkIV

Hello all,
I finished my MkIV in September/November of last year after a 2.5 year build. It was a gratifying experience, and I learned so much from all of the experts on this forum that I am convinced that it would have been a much less pleasurable experience without your support. Thank you!
I am in the "break in" stage right now. And I mean that in the literal, and figurative sense. I'm trying to be careful with the mechanical aspect, but I'm also trying to be careful with learning how the car behaves.
So here is my latest question/scenario for the experts. Yesterday I went for a drive, and for the first time I did a little "spirited acceleration". I was coming out of a slow turn and had plenty of straight highway in front of me, so I stood on the pedal. It was really the first time I could hear the Sniper open all the way up, and wow, she pulls! As the tach needle wound around and I went through 2nd to 3rd gear, I felt like the front end got really light, almost like it was "floating". I won't say I struggled to keep her straight, but it was definitely more difficult than just a leasurely acceleration. Is this behavior normal for these cars? Your thought are appreciated.
Here's my setup: BPE 302/TKX, IRS rear, standard FFR IFS with power steering, and alignment specs are set to 0.5 negative camber all around, 7(ish) positive caster, and somewhere between 1/16 and 1/8 toe-in. Ride height is 4"/4.5". I have the Halibrand replica 17X9 wheels up front with MT StreetComp 245/45 tires, and 17X10.5 rear with 315/35 tires.

The only thing that you didn't tell us was the tire pressure which should be 22 PSI. The front might have felt light when in actuality the rear end could have been moving around. The MT Street Comp tires aren't bad for cruising but are not exactly "sticky."

If you put your foot into it coming out of a turn, well, I wouldn't do that. I did that once and the rear end came around. It was recoverable but I still wonder if the cop that was just ahead of me about 50 yards saw what happened and just ignored it.:p

Haha! That's what I've been envisioning since day one of the build. I'm trying not to end up in a ditch. I should have been more clear to say that I waited until the turn was complete and I had the road lined up in front of me before I pushed the throttle to the firewall. I remember reading the sticky note to all new builders about the propensity for the roadster to "swap ends".
And good point, Jeff. I have the pressures at 22 at all four corners. She weighed in at 2200lbs with only a couple gallons of fuel and me not in it. With fuel and me in it, I'm guessing closer to 2500? I have no intentions of ever tracking this car, and she will be a garage queen for her life with me. I didn't even think about the rear end getting squirrely. (Oh, and you'll be proud to know that my door jambs look great at the dash cowl thanks to your tutelage!)

Stay at 22. I run as low as 18 for autocross. Happy to hear that your bodywork came out well!

Mine while go carting it a few times up my 8% grade I got into it the last time just half throttle 2nd gear and tires let loose and it started getting very loose. But Temps were in the low 50's and 24lb in the rear tires 22lb in front that's going to change.
