Hi Dave,
The inspector assigned a model year of 1968 based on the engine year which I agreed with. As such, the registration process was straight forward at the DMV and classic plates were issued.
From what I gather this is not always the case when guys go to inspection and the DMV.

The model year can make a ton of difference. When I moved from Md to Va it happened to be to a county that required emissions inspection. My huge mistake in never even thinking about it. I had bought the car in Ga where they titled kits as the year they were built and titled. Md followed w/ the same year, 2008. The Va titling computer kicked the 68 car out as needing an emissions inspection so I was dead in the water. It took 6 weeks of calls and emails going all the way up to the top guy in the Va 'Branding' department. That what they called the dept that dealt w/ unusual vehicles. Finally he issued a new title as a 66 so I no longer needed an emission inspection. That was a simple solution but there was only that one guy in the entire Va DMV who could do it. It was pretty nerve racking driving a highly visible car like an FFR throughout Va while still on Md plates.

Yup, can be so frustrating, Craig.

Something anyone doing a build should think about & look into state regs. In NC mine is Antique Auto with a 1965 tag & paperwork. No annual inspection of any kind, very low property tax regardless of what I can sell the car for. Freedom to run a black & yellow 1965 plate with what ever I want on it as long as I carry the AA plate in the car.

Similar options here in Texas. My Cobra has Custom plates. My Camaro has Classic Car plates. Neither of these require emissions testing or annual inspections when we had those.

Funny story on the Camaro, when I transferred the title I got standard plates so I applied for the Classic Auto ones. About a month later they came in so I went to the DMV to pick them up. Was told there was a fee, of course I was expecting that. The fee was $0.50. That's right, 50 cents!

Only property tax here is on our homes which they're talking about doing away with.

Sounds like you lucked out rt. It all seems to depend on who you talk to and what their interpretation of the regs are. And in some cases they are just ignorant of the regs. Back when I went through the process composites we’re labeled as the year of the inspection. So mine is a 2008. As far as taxes go that changes from town to town unless you have those coveted classic plates.
