Ok, I am in the midst of trying to get my Roadster registered and licensed. I have been to DMV 3 times now and am about to have my brake and light safety inspection. I was able to get the CHP to assign a VIN. DMV says I need the safety inspection before they will issue the sequence number for the emissions exemption. Another question I have is what year is assigned to these cars? The CHP assigned it as 0000, but when I asked dmv they said it would be a 2025 or 2026. So when they inspect it, is it a 1965 or a 2025? What tells the safety inspection guy it is not inspected as a 2025? Will it pass as a 2025? If anybody has any experience with this I would appreciate knowing what your experience has been.

I'll try to help, but it's been so long ago that i got my car registered that it may be different now, because there's things that you're mentioning that i didn't do with my car.

first, the CHP did not assign my VIN number and did not assign the model year of my car to be 0000. my vin number is the FFR chassis number that is stamped on the frame of my car (but i forget who assigned it, it may have been the BAR tech) i did go for a CHP check, but i thought they only checked the production numbers on the engine, transmission, and chassis to ensure that they weren't on a stolen list. i did pass that check.

i did have a Brake and Lamp inspection - passed

i went to a California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) appointment where the tech inspected my car and declared it to represent a car produced in 1965. he did do a sniff test on my car and noted the emissions output readings on my record (i guess) but then declared my car as smog exempt (because it represents a 1965 model year automobile) and let me know that for that model year there was no emissionoutput requirement and placed this sticker on my car's frame.
Note i do not have a backup indicator light, or windshield wipers on my car.

see that my car's YR/MK/MDL is: 1965 SPCN Cobra (SPCN = Specialty Constructed)
and that it is registered under the SB100 regulations
i've marked out in black all of the sequence numbers assigned to my car

then i went to the DMV, where they required me to have the FFR MSO document and made copies of all the receipts for all the parts on my car, they asked me how i acquired the motor, transmission, and rear axel since i didn't have receipts for those parts and i showed them the title of my donor car which was a Mustang GT that i sourced those parts from.

I recall that the clerk i was working with needed help to complete the process for the SB100 rules. she asked for the Brake and Lamp cert. the paperwork from the CHP, and BAR appointment, and then after she made copies of all the docs and receipts and added them up for some kind of declared value of the car for the tax calculation, i paid the taxes and applicable fees, and got out of there!

i hope that helps.

Good luck! i hate going to the DMV

I documented my experience in this thread back in 2019 then updated it again in 2024 when i went through the process again:

This looks like what I am going thru. I have the brake and light inspection today. Did you need an e-brake indicator? Windshield wipers? Reverse lights? Where do you find a BAR station?

No ebrake indicator on any of my cars.

I had windshield wipers installed but nobody looked at them.

if you go to asktheref.org you can search for bar locations. I did both of my cars at miramar college

hope this helps

A roadster is a "replica" of a 1965, so no reverse lights needed, I have no wipers or e brake indicator on my mk4 and passed all inspections.

first you submit docs / pictures online to the BAR, then you make an appointment with a BAR station.

I got my SB100 sequence number on my first visit to the DMV, don't leave without it.

My Vin number is the Factory five number stamped on the frame, confirmed by CHP and again by DMV because California.
