View Full Version : Glove box "How To"

Here are a few detail pictures of my home-made glove box. I started with pre-cut (water jet) dash panel with the blank remnant from the glove box door cut-out. Because I have a heater, my glove box is very shallow - only 1" deep or so. It's primary purposes are to be a place to lock my insurance card, garage door opener, and small items and to add a nice appearance to the passenger side of the dash, which on the S/C dash looks a little too empty to my eyes. I made the backing panel out of some .025 aluminum sheet that was real easy to bend with my benchtop brake, then I added some bulb seal to the sides and bottom to keep things from falling through. A couple of screws through the backing panel into the heater box help secure it in place. The final product will be leather or felt covered.

For the door, my goal was to hide the hinge mounting screws. I did that by using a pair of hinges from McMaster-Carr (Part No. 11205A11 - $2.09 ea) that I mounted to a piece of angle aluminum which will in turn be mounted to the dash panel where it attaches to the under dash support panel with three screws. To attach the hinges to the door and to give the door some added heft and vintaqe appearance, I cut a piece of fiberboard about 1/8" smaller than the door blank and this will be epoxied to the door blank and then the whole thing will be covered in leather. To attach the hinges to the fiberboard, I installed a pair of "T" nuts and cut a small relief in the fiberboard on the side that will be epoxied to the aluminum door blank. This will totally hide the mounting, keeping the final leather covering free from bulges or blisters.

The final product will include a cable to hold the door level when open. As with GregM, I used a stainless steel cabinet pull (called a "finger pull" - I got quite a laugh at that one when the guy at the store told me the name) and lock from a local RV supply store. All said and done, I think the entire glove box cost me somewhere in the area of $10 - 12.

Many thanks to GregM and others who documented their glove box fabrication, helping me figure this one out.

Photos available - PM me.

Chris,

Great timing! I just cut my door out of my dash! I've been scowering the 'net and local stores looking for that finger pull! Did you get it at a local RV store or at a national chain?

Thanks for the hinge part numbers! You are really going to help me out. Don't forget to post your continued progress; I can't wait to see how the result turns out!

David - the finger pull came from a local RV place, not a chain. The pulls and the locks were separate. Good news is that the pulls came two to a pack and I still have one left. PM me with your address and I'll send it to you. You'll need the lock portion, but that should be easy to source. The one I used is a 7/8" deep cylinder and was made by a company called RV Designer. You can reach them at rvdesigner.com or 800-938-5883. The lock part number is L547.

The only thing left for me to do before covering everything is to add a small ramp or spacer of sorts to the inside of the glove box where the lock tab will contact the backside of the dash panel. Not quite sure how I'm going to do that one yet, but I do have some rectangular nylon stock that I bought from McMaster for another project that I think will work perfectly. The ramp will act as both a catch for the lock tab and as a means of pulling the glove box door tight when shut. One of the other finishing touches will be to add some piping around the door edge (except between the hinges) to also act as a seal - the originals had the piping, too.

Great post Chris.

In contact with AST Glen to make me a dash with the glove box cutout and was wondering about making my own glovebox and door. The timing on your post is perfect.

Thanks,

Ron

Chris-

Sorry about what follows, but I just can't resist. I notice you have writing on the aluminum dash door now, so I propose the following...

You need to write above the new "finger pull," that you have installed: "Here, pull my finger." It will be a nice inside joke for you when you cover the aluminum, and I think it's funny.

You may not think it is very funny and even a bit sophomoric, so I apologize if you are in that camp...

Oh, and nice glove box, really well done!! No kidding, I really like it; it's just that I like the joke too...

Regards,

Steve
