Hi guys,

I'm hoping you can help answer a question that has been popping up in my head about the track width between the traditional Mk4 Roadster and the 289 FIA Mk4 variant.

When I look at FF's design info for the two cars, they say both have the same track (58.5") and both use the identical Mk4 frame. FF actually refers to the 289 FIA car as a cosmetic change only from the original Roadster.

As I've been doing research to install the pin drive front suspension on my 289 FIA car, I've read several times that the 289 car is already narrower than the Roadster, even without the pin drive mod. For the newbie in the room (me!), could someone help explain which is true? Not that this impacts my build, but I just want to understand what's correct so I don't say anything stupid (at least more so than usual).

Thanks!

Rob

I don't know the answer to that but if you're getting your pin drive wheels from Vintage Wheels you could call and ask Bob. I bet he knows.

I believe that the "width" reference is the body/fenders not the chassis width.

That's what I originally thought too, but I also saw some mention in terms of track. But I agree with you - the FIA car is narrower than the Roadster.

I believe that the FIA car uses shorter front control arms to reduce the track width.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess its the same chassis as the roadster with different suspension components. I doubt they developed separate chassis for the two cars. I would bet it's a cosmetic change only.

My understanding is, the only difference is the body, gas cap placement, door latches, hood scoop, front body mount, tail lights, and petty bar. Chassis and suspension are the same. Probably why there is no 289 FIA/USRRC manual, just a supplement that's only for the slight differences. About as much information or more than what's provided for pin drive suspension installation.

Yeah, I'm at the point now where I think it really is only cosmetic differences as Tundra2050 pointed out. I even checked the FF parts listing, and they only have one UCA for the Mk4 chassis. And that's fine - like I mentioned earlier I just want to know what that reality is.

Thanks!
