UPDATED 5/5/16 - Although FFR now sells a version of under dash tubes for use with their 289 body style kits, I thought that some of you out there may be interested in making a set yourself, both to save a little money and to also make them functional as mechanical chases for wiring and such (I think the FFR versions are more of a hard-mount).

Original thread follows -

Here are a couple pics of my under dash tubes that mimic the scuttle tubes that were visible on the original cars between the dash and the transmission tunnel. Since my car has the S/C dash layout, I wanted to use one of these to run the speedo cable up to the back of the speedo and this alignment made it a straight shot to the reverser that is on the back of my speedo. The other tube is going to be used as a chase for wiring for the trunk, fuel sender, and tail lights.

I used thinwall chrome-moly tubing that just allowed enough ID for the speedo cable nut to pass through - this kept the outside diameter down as much as possible. Even so, these are much larger than the original chassis tubes. Installation is simple - I just cut a small groove at the top of each tube for a one-inch "C" clip and wrapped the edge of the holes in the trans tunnel and the under dash support panel (from Replicaparts.com - vendor) with some grommet edging. The grommeting caused the tubes to have a tight, rattle free fit, while the "C" clips keep them from falling down into the trans tunnel. By not securing them from below, I can simply push them up into the dash area (limited by the speedo, though) enough to at least remove the trans tunnel if need be at some point down the road.

Probably the most difficult part was getting the angles right as they follow the slope of the dash, but also angle in from the sides. The originals were somewhat more spread out to the sides of the trans tunnel, but this is the layout that worked best on my build, while giving a more correct look to that area under the dash that is otherwise pretty bare.

Note the alignment with the speedo - the tube brings the speedo cable right up to the reverser....

That's pretty sneaky! You know how people have different queues they use to identify a "real Cobra"? You have created another stubbling block for those guys. Nice work and very functional! I wish I had thought of that. It would have left the front of the tunnel cleaner in my build. Very nice. WEK.

Today's past how-to of another useful mod - one that adds both an original touch to the car as well as serving the purpose of being a place to run the speedo cable and other wiring.

A couple of additional pics.....

FFR supplied carpet was cut to fit around the tubes - this is the standard transmission tunnel piece that I simply cut a few inches off the front of and then overlapped the two pieces. The carpet was edged by a local upholstery shop to give it that old-school British car look.

The tubes really blend in with the interior once powder coated - if you look closely in this picture, you'll see a small stub in the cockpit cowl edge in the top center. The original cars had a tube that protruded through the skin above a small notch in the dash. The dash tubes came together there and went down at angles to the main chassis rails, which is what produces the angle of the tubes.

Here are a couple of close-ups of the stub - the first is an original car (CSX2050) and the second is mine.....

Al,

It's actually Ford 1965 Ivy Green / PPG code 43408 (EnviroBase water-borne). Here are more pics showing how it changes in different light....

What is the notch out of the top center of dash for?

For that stub that I mentioned in post #4 - it allows the tube to clear the dash... the original cars (as shown in the pic of CSX2050) had that in their dash, so I wanted to copy it for mine.

Here's another original car showing that stub tube - it was a way of supporting the center of the cowl hoop tubing over which the aluminum skin was stretched....

Great write up. Seeing your dash tubes made me want to build my own also. Though I wasn't going for the amount of detail you certainly accomplished, and should be very proud of, I wanted it to look pretty close but provide added stiffness for the dash. I ended up using the same 3/4" OD x .065" wall 304SS tube I used for the overrider/bumpers. Since I left my rollbars and sidepipes with a "brushed" (actually red scotchbrite) finish, I did that to the tubes also.

Mine were made by mocking up the tubes on the car with masking tape running from the backside of the center of the dash hoop down to the tunnel frame pieces forming an upside-down V that runs parallel-ish to the dash face. My dash face is at a bit more of a vertical angle than the FFR so I don't get the glare from the gauges on the windshield at night. I cut the tube to go from the tunnel frame to 1/4" above the bottom flange of the dash but about 3/8-1/2" forward of the dash flange, so as to clear the back of the speedo. I used 2" x 11ga steel to make a bottom flange across the tunnel backbone which is necessary as my tunnel top is removeable and 2" x 16ga set at the angle of the dash flange to make the upper flange. As I am running the electronic FFR/Speedhut gauges, no speedo cable to route thru the tubes, but I did route the power for my seat heaters thru there.

I also mounted the switches for my footbox fans directly behind the tubes on the upper flange and the 4-way flasher switch in the dash center on that same upper flange.

Initial mounting:
