Hi guys,
Could one of you please post a picture or two of your fuel filler neck from the trunk? I was looking at doing various things with the upper trunk area, including a Breeze cubby setup, but then I had the "oh...." moment when I remembered that the filler neck is run in that area. I'm not sure if the Breeze cubby panel would work with the filler tube setup - so best to ask now versus getting frustrated later.
On a related note, I noticed that the filler cap is supposed to float and not be connected to the body - did you guys come up with a solution for sealing that up in case you get caught in the rain?
Thanks!!!

I'm building a Mk4 289-style with two FFR 3-point rollbars. The factory location for the gas filler just seems inconvenient and wrong. (I'd prefer the "427" location on the fender...)
I'm thinking of putting the whole thing in the trunk near the right-hand side.

Yeah, I'd imagine it would be a PITA to install the 289 fuel filler in the original location with two roll bars - I don't think filling up would be fun either. You'd probably need to go with the trunk filler in your case.

Best I have of the filler location. I mounted mine by screwing into the turtleneck - not floating like the book says.

Also, note that I cut the return flange off the trunk lid seal lip, so the seal will sit properly. If your 289 is like mine was, the extra turn of the seal lip put the seal down and away from the trunk lid. Assembly manual says and shows nothing about that.

I'm not going to install the roll bar on this car, I like how they look without, like the early Cobras. From a safety standpoint, I drove a TR-6 and an XK-140 for many years without one.

I attached the Le Mans cap to the body with a rubber grommet. I debated this one and there are some links and discussions about using the included pedestal, or attaching directly to the body. Here's a link with a picture half way down the page I took of the fuel filler neck from inside the trunk.
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?50908-Le-Mans-fuel-cap-overflow-drain-hole-on-a-289 the discussion was about how to deal with the drain hole so it doesn't drain fuel into your trunk if you overfill the gas which will undoubtedly happen. FWIW all those bends make filling a slow process........at least for me. Hope this helps

I also attached the cap to the body at the suggested factory location. I also have the breeze cubby.
After I did all of this I read that Factory Five were possibly going to produce a soft top in 2026 and with the the fuel cap in this location that would preclude the use of a soft top.

Thanks Jim - your prior post definitely helped! I'll explain what I'm up to in a separate post, but I needed to visualize the space used and the routing to see if I'd have an issue.
BTW I think your roadster will look sweet without the roll bar. I think both look great, but when I sat in the 289 FIA car at FF's open house I found the Petty bar made getting out of the car MUCH easier! Not something I was expecting, but a nice bonus :)
And thanks for the tip on the trunk seal - I'll be sure to check that out!

I've read your post on the Le Mans cap and the drain hole before - it gave a great head's up to what I'll need to deal with when I get to that point. Plus the pic definitely helped! I've now got this mental rolodex going with all of these important points (plus lots of bookmarks :D ).

OK, your last photo helped a lot. I can see that I can basically slot the Breeze cubby panel to fit over the filler tube. But I'll want to make sure the panel is removable so I can get to the filler line in case something unexpected happens ;)
I was looking into the possibility of a soft top too, then had the same epiphany that with the fuel filler situated where it is, that wouldn't really be an option. Oh well...

PS - I like your dash mod with center drop to emulate the street dash. I'm assuming you're running the FF vintage gauges, right? If so, who's clock did you use? Appreciate the info!

Again, thank you for the great pics and insights. Definitely helped clear things up!
So, for my 289 build I'm trying to keep the engine bay fairly uncluttered. It'll be a bit of a hybrid - I'm going for a traditional look with a few modern updates. After years of carbs I'm going with port fuel injection (Pro Flow4), plus power steering and power brakes. After my last project which was manual steering/manual brakes/manual transmission I'm definitely going with the power assist (but still manual trans ;) ).
As a result, I'm going to keep the battery in the trunk (despite all of the great feedback on the Breeze battery box). I've been mulling over many solutions for the power brakes, and I've decided to go with the new remote brake booster that was introduced for the Mk 5. But instead of mounting it on the front cross brace I'll be mounting it in the trunk, on the upper level. It's 16" long by 7" in diameter and will fit, with a little juggling. I just have to route my front lines to it, then back to the front. I'll share more details when I get closer, but this should be the silver bullet I've been looking for.

Those are Smiths Gauges! I went with a mechanical speedo for that vintage look.
Also I can get to the underside of the fuel filler and the seat belt anchors through the rear cubby access.
