View Full Version : Power steering hose connection leaking

I had to make a new low pressure power steering hose to replace the FFR one since I am using a GM reservoir. The connection seems to be a standard AN6 but it leaks at my AN6 connection without any pressure on it at all.

It is an EVIL AN6 connector on my hose.

I am thinking either my AN6 female connection is bad and should be replaced OR maybe this is not really an AN6 but some imposter.

I am assuming that it is leaking from the power steering end and not the Evil end? I had the same issue (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?48937-Wedel456-s-Build-Thread-Gen3-Coupe-North-Carolina&p=593005&viewfull=1#post593005) and got these (https://breezeautomotive.com/shop/adapter-fitting-kit-06an-for-87-93-mustang-power-steering-rack/) from Breeze. I think the washers are the fix (at least in my installation).

Did you cut your inner PTFE hose square, and did you peel back the braid to install the ferrule? If so, and you ran it all together to crush the ferrule, it should be leak-free. If it's leaking, especially without pressure, you didn't assemble it correctly. FWIW, my entire fuel system is Evil Energy, and I'm leak-free. Or at least I am now. After assembling it all, I pressure tested everything, and found two leaks. I disassembled those 6AN fittings, cleaned up the end of the PTFE, used a new ferrule, and crushed it in. No leaks.

It looks like your ferrule nut is bottomed out on the fitting. It shouldn't be. Should be just shy of contact. Some brands actually specify the gap. You may have overtightened it or have a problem with the ferrule. Either way, do as Greg suggests, then give it a quick submersions test with air pressure to verify that it has no leaks. Be sure to use a new ferrule.

I had leaking issues as well with my BPE installed PS pump connections. See if this thread helps at all

Thanks everyone for the responses. As I go through the links provided, I thought I should be more specific as to where this little drip lives. I should have done that first.

Never had much luck with the EVIL fittings. They always seemed to be mismatched to the hoses and leaked. I went through a few before I put it together. Swapped out to Hot Rod hoses and never had an issues again.

I used EVIL fittings/hose for my fuel and power steering system and have had no issues after 3500 miles. I would use them again.

These have worked well for me in the past to solve minor AN leaks.

A leak where your arrows point suggest the AN connection is leaking. Typically, this would mean it needs slight tightening, but it's odd that its leaking with no pressure. I'd try tightening it because you have nothing to lose. The adapter is easily replaced and so is the swivel section of the hose end.

You might try switching the two adapters on the rack to see if the leak moves with that part being moved. If yes, then you need a new adapter. If it still leaks it's likely not the adapter. Then separate the hose end and reassemble with a new ferrule and swivel piece to see if that changes things. If that fixes it, it suggests the mating surface in the swivel had an issue.

Also, remove the adapter and inspect the teflon washer. If it's deformed, it might be that the fluid bubble that forms looks like it's coming from the threaded connection above it, when it's actually the adapter connection that's leaking. Just another thought.
