View Full Version : Steering Wheel Position Question

Today I was working on getting my driver's seat positioned correctly so I could drill the holes for my sliders. I was using a laser to ensure the pattern i.e. the rails, were essentially square to the line of the steering shaft. I am working under the assumption if the seat is square and perpendicular to the steering shaft it will be square to the wheel. This was a pretty straight forward exercise.

During this process I happened to be standing above the wheel and glanced down. I had never really noticed but here's the question of the day. Is the frame built to have the steering wheel not square to the dash? My steering shaft is in and everything is mounted correctly but I was a little taken aback by how "non-square" to the dash the wheel is. If this is normal that's fine but I want to confirm before I drill my holes for the seat sliders. I am guessing the inboard edge of the wheel is about 7/16" closer to the dash than the outboard edge.

Tim, I have a similar condition. About 3/8 closer on the right side. 222656222657

OK, thanks. I'm guessing it's just a product of the cockpit shape. Going to proceed forward.

I guess mine was too. I mounted my seats and felt like the steering wheel wasn't pointed at me, so I shifted the pillow block outwards about an inch, which felt better

Thanks Jim. I know these cars have some quirks just because of the design so I am just going to roll with it.

The first time you sit behind the wheel the offset feels terrible. After driving the car a few times you don't even notice it anymore.
