Hello everyone
I’m building a Mk5 using a Ron Francis harness and I have the Speedhut GPS Vintage gauges. The problem I am experiencing is the turn signal lights in the speedometer. They both stay on when the ignition is on AND when it’s off. Also, this may not be significant but the lights do blink if I activate the left/right switch (but only if the IGN is on). I also noticed that the emergency blinkers do nothing when activated.
Ignorance runs high in my electrical abilities so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Do you have the actual lights connected on all four corners?

Thank you for responding. I’ve just completed the dash/gauge wiring. I have ran all the wires throughout the car but have not attached the lights.
I’m guessing that’s important?

Yes, you'll need the loads in place for the flashers to work properly.

Thanks. Will this also fix the turn lights staying on when the ignition is off?

That may be a different issue. Let's start by creating a valid test configuration for the signal lights.

The hazard circuit is always hot, so that is a clue. How do you have the hazard switch connected? If you are using the kit provided switch, be sure you only use one end of the switch. You'll connect both left and right to two pins on one end, the power to the two pins in the center, and leave the two pins on the other end with nothing connected.

So, the Mk5 turn signal/hazard switch is now on the steering column. We are supposed to use the connector plug that says for hot rod only. I’m not sure if we are speaking the same language. I’m assuming you are talking about prior Mk5 wiring.

It's the same harness, but if you are plugging into the steering column plug, be sure to isolate the loose wires for turn signal and hazards. I just removed the steering column plug from my harness on my Coupe and the wires are simply combined at the harness connector that connects to the dash harness.

I pulled up the new MK5 manual and this is all I see for turn signal wiring:

Have you cut the wires the manual instructs to cut? Those would be the ones for the dash mounted switch.

Also, check to see if you have power to your brake light wires while the pedal is at rest. You may need to move the wires to the second set of pins on the brake light switch or adjust the switch to turn the brake lights off when the pedal is at rest.

Thank you for all the information. You are absolutely correct about the brake connection. I had it backwards. As you suggested, I added lights to all four corners. That fixed a lot. However, now I two other issues- all four corners flash when activating the turn signal. The other issue is when pressing the brake pedal all four corners light up.
I’m still looking at the other items you have suggested. It may be another day or two but I really appreciate your input.
Thank you

Ok! Progress has been made! Everything but one item is working perfectly. The one issue that I have is that both back turn signals flash when activating left or right. Not sure where I go at this point.

Does the MK5 come with a trailer light adapter? If so, is it wired in?

No. The GM turn signal switch, now part of the Mk5 kit and plugged into the RF Hot Rod connector, handles the rear lights without a trailer light converter. The purple brake light wires in the rear harness are not connected to the rear light fixtures. The GM switch turns on both turn signals when the brake pedal (and subsequent +12V) is pushed. Sounds weird but it works. My Truck build had the same setup with a similar GM switch in the ididit column. The harness mods in post #10 above are mandatory for it to work properly though.

OK. Wiring issues appear to solved. Thank you everyone for your help!
To get the turn signals to work individually, I had to remove the purple (brake) wires on both lights. I assumed that I would no longer have brake lights but, no, the brake lights work fine.
So, at this point the purple wires are taped up and not being used. I really do not understand but I am not complaining.
