Hello All,

I am thrilled to have registered the roadster today! Perfectly timed for the beginning of winter....

There are already a couple threads about Utah registration that are super helpful, but I thought I would post my experience as a supplement. The forum has been invaluable for me, so I hope I can contribute. And the registration in Utah was actually extremely easy!

From my understanding you can do the VIN inspection when you are in go kart mode, and you can register the vehicle once it is "assembled". There was no inspection when I registered the car, and no one looked too hard at the photos I provided during the registration process at the DMV. I chose to do the process after the car was finished and painted.

Here is the website for the classification of the registration in Utah: https://dmv.utah.gov/register/vehicles/kit-vehicles/

I registered it as a "Type 2" kit vehicle, which I believe is the only applicable registration for these cars.

First step is to call your local police non-emergency dispatch number and request a VIN inspection. In my case I had to call the unified police because I live outside of the Salt Lake City limits. It took me a couple attempts with different numbers but in the end the correct number was to call dispatch at 801-840-4000 and follow the menu prompts depending on the district you live in. The police visit for the VIN inspection wasn't by appointment, I simply called when I was ready and the officer was there within an hour or so.

For the VIN inspection you need the "Form TC-661, Certificate of Inspection". The officer was only interested in inspecting the serial number on the chassis, which was simply the serial number on the frame under the steering wheel. I have heard they may also want to inspect the serial number for the engine, but in my case he didn't. I assume he then checked if it was stolen, and signed the form. It was about 2 minutes of admin, and 30 minutes chatting about the car.

The DMV accepts the serial number on the chassis for the VIN assignment of the vehicle.

The next and last step is to go to the local DMV with more documents. Make sure to make an appointment online to avoid any waiting times. I'll put a list below of the documents needed, and you should be able to google the forms to find them.

Factory Five Certificate of Origin (The state calls it Manufacturer's Statement of Origin "MSO")
Form TC-661, Certificate of Inspection (signed previously by the officer during the VIN inspection)
Form TC-569A, Ownership Statement
Form TC-656, Application For Utah Title and Registration
Factory Five kit invoice
Invoice for the drivetrain or components outside of kit order (If applicable)
Form TC-817, Application for Personalized Plates and Replacing of Existing Personalized Plates (If you want personalized plates)
Pictures printed out of the vehicle from all angles, including a photo of the engine compartment
Printed out a page of the legislation stating a replica vehicle shall be registered as the year of the vehicle of which it is a replica (I will provide this below)

Below is how I chose to register the car. The most important being that it's registered as a 1965 Replica, which is important for multiple reasons.

Year: 1965 Replica
Make: Factory Five Racing Inc
Model: Roadster

Here is the link to the Utah title legislation regarding registering the car as a "1965 Replica" due to it being a replica of a 1965 Cobra. The relevant info is at the bottom of the page: https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter1A/41-1a-S514.html?v=C41-1a-S514_1800010118000101

Upon the registration I had to pay sales tax on the kit but not the drivetrain as I had already paid it through Blueprint when I made the engine and transmission order. They calculate the sales tax when you register the car at the DMV based on the invoices you provide. In my case it was around $3,100, which hurt a bit. To be honest, the whole process felt like it was solely a way for them to get $3,100.

They issued me with a temporary operating permit on the spot. The plates, sticker, and title will come in the mail in a few weeks, and they will also return the Certificate of Origin with these items because they keep it until the registration has been processed.

That's it! It was very surprising how easy it was. In fact you could do the VIN inspection, title, and registration all in one day if you were organized. No emissions or safety inspection required.

I hope that's helpful to anyone registering in Utah in the future. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Happy driving!

I'm now at that stage also and I'm friends with the county sheriff just up the street this should be a slam dunk.
