Hey guys,

I lucked out and picked up a vintage Harrison surge tank that I want use for my 289 roadster build. It's off an early 60's Corvette and is the right part # for this application. It needs a bit of cleaning and a little repair (pin hole in the tank) but for $25 it was definitely worth taking a chance with it. I'll need to come up with the brackets but that should be fairly straightforward.

Speaking of mounting, have any of you installed one of these surge tanks on your roadster? I'm curious to know where you mounted it, and how the cooling lines are routed. I appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks!

Rob

Rob,
We used the Corvette tank on our SBF race cars in sixties and seventies SCCA cars, and a few performance street applications.
They are not cheap these days but lighter and more period correct than the aftermarket fabricated tanks. Installed correctly they function like the BBF tanks in Cobras.
Make sure the pressure cap is the highest point of the cooling system.
The larger tube plumbs to the top of the intake manifold near the thermostadt.
The smaller tube plumbs to the top of the (crossflow) radiator to vent air to the tank while filling and while running.
The pressure relief line can go to ground or in our case to a catch tank.
These pictures are an original AC 289 Sport and my replica that has a European plastic tank in the same configuration.

Got one on a car in the shop currently.

Bottom port goes to the return port on the water pump. Replace the bleed petcock on the top of the FFR radiator with a barbed fitting and route a hose to the side port of the Harrison tank. The nipple just below the cap is overflow and can be left open or routed to the bottom of a recovery tank.

I bought a replica Harrison tank from Forte. I mounted mine to a piece of aluminum that attaches to the top radiator frame tube. The piece of aluminum was roughly 4"x 10, and I believe 1/8" thickness. I bolted the aluminum to the frame piece, then bent it down to get the height right.
