View Full Version : PS Pump Question on Stock 302

It’ll be some time before I can do my engine swap and in the meantime I’m continuing to drive my Mk4. Being a stock ‘93 302 I have the dreaded whine and have unsuccessfully bled the system.
I planned to swap the pump with a new one (gotta love stock block stuff) as they are cheap.
I also have a stock Ford rack.
Any suggestions on best practice?

I see mention of an inline valve to reduce pressure but….

Doc, you don't need an inline valve to reduce pressure if you are using a Ford pump for a Foxbody application. However, the Ford pumps are notorious for the whine, and it seems to be hit or miss... Some will be silent upon install and develop the whine later and some will whine upon install and become silent. To avoid all the whine altogether, you can convert to a GM style pump at which time you will need a valve to reduce the pressure or purchase a GM pump that has already been valved for the Ford rack.

Change to Honda spec fluid or add a tablespoon or two of STP oil conditioner.

YES, Honda fluid

No rhyme or reason to it but some Ford pumps howl like a cat in heat and others are silent. It's been that way since I started working on them in the 1970s. Noisy ones will last 100,000 miles though. A fluid change might help...or might not. Yes, you can back off the pressure by trimming the pressure relief valve spring, or by using a Heidt's valve which will allow you to vary the assist. I used this on my Mk3 and would change the setting for street, track or autocross.

I trimmed the spring on mine. I actually went a little too far so found a few thin washers at ACE and was able to shim it to exactly the assist that I liked.

Hey guys — quick update / question on power steering.

I tried to change the fluid and followed the priming procedure, but I still can’t get it to work properly. On top of that, I’m now seeing a leak from the bottom of the pump. Since this was a donor pump and I don’t know the true age/history, I’m leaning toward replacing it entirely.

I’m looking at Mark at Breeze’s pump + mount kit (Breeze-70611). It comes with the pulley installed and looks very similar to the Jones Racing style pumps (the copies you see on Summit that are made in Taiwan).

A couple questions for anyone who’s run this setup:

Any real-world feedback on the Breeze pump and mount kit (fitment, reliability, leaks, etc.)?

I’m trying to buy on-shore only if possible.

My mechanic is recommending a Jones Racing pump sourced via Detroit Speed, since it’s made in the USA and is valved for the correct pressure for the Mustang rack. The only unknown is whether the Detroit Speed bracket/mount kit he’s suggesting will work with my setup.

If anyone has confirmed fitment details, part combo recommendations, or a proven “buy once” solution, I’m all ears.

Works great--quiet, no leaks, smaller and looks better than the Ford pump. Pressure is about perfect (IMO) for the standard-ratio Fox Mustang rack.

Thanks for the reply. Did you also use the Breeze mount kit?

Any chance I could get a few pics of final fitment?

Sounds like our setup is very similar. Were you able to use the OE lines or did you custom make a set?
Mark wasn't quite sure if the OE length line would reach that new top position on his pump.

The Detroit Speed mount looks pretty nice. The one piece spacers are nice.

My car was manual steer when I bought it, so there were no 'OE' lines. Not sure what line set FF supplies if you spec power steering (Fox Mustang?). In my case I had the pressure line made by a place that makes hydraulic hoses and used 3/8" transmission cooler hose for the low-pressure side.

I ended up taking Marks advice from Breeze. Going to try a new OE pump for the time being but also ordered a new hose kit from him. He offered a really nice “ready to re-route” kit.
And a wealth of knowledge

Swapped out the stock pump for a new Ford PS pump using Mercon V fluid and new Breeze lines and the new pump is now significantly quieter.
Also for anyone using Marks (Breeze) PS hose kit which has unequal size hoses, it took a bit but I found these Vibrant Hose 20641 separator that clamp perfectly to the unequal size lines with no shimming required. Summit was best price and availability.226505
This configuration allowed the hoses to gently travel down and underneath the steering column, back up to the pump. Looks far better than up and over.
Thanks for the advice to all
