View Full Version : Inner fender arch amount to leave?

Hi, all. I am finally at the point that I can start priming doors, hood, and trunk lid. The body only has a few blemishes I keep finding as I walk around the body with my hand. One area I have looked at in the past but not sure where I want to be is in regard to how much inner lip to leave for the fender arches. I have cut and sanded quite a bit off, but I still have a little remaining after the fender lip rolls under. I actually had overcut one fender and it looks good, but I didn't want to cause an issue with strength or look. The FFR video I have seemed to leave a bit more than I would want to, so I am asking what most of you did. All I can find in a search of the forum is older material from about 10 years ago. A few recent pics of the look from a few angles would be appreciated if possible.

Thanks as always,
Mark

Mark,

I left a little lip so that my front fenders match my rear fenders.

Also, we've been street legal for 5 or 6 years and yes I miss the build so I'm jealous.

Here are a few random pics that show how I trim and finish the fronts. The rears are pretty much the same.

These show how I cut and shape the front of the wheel opening across to the oil cooler scoop to make a smooth transition and eliminate the awkward crooked line that the bodies come with.

Here's how I treat the rear of the front wheel opening.

Trim them back and shape a radius using 80 and 150.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the replies. Steve, having decided to do the paint and body myself makes ME jealous...I'd much rather be driving it now, lol. Jeff, and sorry to ask but angle of light and perspective can make a pic look misleading. It looks like there isn't much if anything left beyond the radius. Is that correct? It looks like whatever flange may have existed has been radiused into the main radius, making more of a full round. True, or am I seeing it wrong?

In addition to my last questions above, when I did the initial trimming of the fender lip, on the inner part there are irregular widths because of how it was molded. I don't see it from the outside but if I am in the wheel well looking at the lip from the inside as it goes along the fender, the thickness of the material varies. Is this normally sanded at the thicker areas to match the rest, or left alone? I can post a pic tomorrow of what I am seeing if my description is not clear. Thanks again.
