Hi all,

I have been waiting to try this when I finally found some time. I have a used 2021 coyote with 11k miles and a 2021 10r80 shell. Before buying my control pack and diverging from the traditional tkx 5 speed I figured I would test fit things to see if this was possible. First I tried to stab the motor in with the trans attached that was not working. So I put the motor in loose and then mated the trans from underneath. This has a surprising amount of room around the back of the motor compared to my type 65. It looks like this could work with minimal modifications to the passenger side tunnel. First remove parking brake mount, grind the trans a bit and thin out the passenger side angled down tube. I need to level the car then play with the angle of the motor to verify this is feasible, but I think it will work. What am I not thinking of? It will be a bit harder with the flywheel on, but I think it will still work.

No one has one of these trannies in a mk4 and I have been heavily advised this wouldn’t work. My wife is going to drive this one with the auto and I shall have my Daytona. Is it just the blasphemy of the auto that has lead others to try to influence me against this or am I missing something?

Shelby's Super Snake cars had autos and no one complained.

SVTFreak and I both have 6R80's in '33 Hot Rods, for the same reason as you. They fit (barely) and work just fine. The 10R80 is larger so you may need to do some tunnel mods and you will probably have to get a custom driveshaft. Other than that, it should be an easy task (Famous Last Words...).

What are you using to control the 6r80? Us shift or factory Ford control pack? How did what you chose work?

I have a control pack that I accidentally bought if you need one.

Hi Mike,
Is it the correct one for 2021 mustang engine with 2021 or newer 10r80? There are a couple different versions the way I understand it.

I'm using the Ford Racing controls pack - it was included when I bought the Coyote crate motor and 6R80 together as a package. It's not on the road yet, so I can't comment on how it will work. I will be getting a custom tune, and I understand that the tuner will adjust the trans controls as part of the process. I don't remember what SVTFreak is using, but he has had the car driving for a while now - you should send him a PM since he isn't seen on the Forum too much these days...

One other point, based on SVTFreak driving feedback: It's highly recommended to change out the stock torque converter while you have easy access.

Here are his (paraphrased) comments on the subject: When you talk to a convertor company be very specific and say that it's not the stall speed that's the problem it's the (flash) speed. With stock brakes and a lightweight car the flash speed or the RPM's where the car will start to creep forward and overcome the braking power at idle. You won't be anywhere near even an 1800 stall at a stop sign but you will be into the flash range of it so it will be moving the car. The typical way to control this is to go to a higher than ideal stall speed for your combo so that the flash speed also rises to a point that won't make the car creep forward under a reasonable amount of pressure on the brake pedal. I suggest going 3600 though. Mine is 3400 and, while it’ll work, it could use a touch more stall. (Note that his is supercharged and weighs a few hundred pounds more than my NA Coyote)

He also recommended a lower cost source:
Yank Performance Converters $1100 (for the 6R80 version)

Thanks so much for the feedback and converter source.
