I know that having a regular Roadster (not challenge car) you can do AutoX, but what road races can you enter in the Southern Cal and Nevada area?

You can run open track or HPDE, (high performance drivers ed), and also time trials but not door to door racing. These events are held regularly enough to wear you out.

I have a "regular" roadster. When I built it, I had no intention of doing any kind of racing. Then, I made a huge mistake. I went to an open track day. Now, I'm hooked. it's more addictive than crack. And probably more expensive.

But, yes, you can go racing. I started out with HPDE (High Performance Driving Event). Then I "graduated" to TT (Time Trials). It's essentially the same as HPDE, except you're competing for points. No door to door racing, no bumping and grinding. You're at your fastest when you have clear track, so everybody wants to spread out. It's a real blast.

I was told no by NASA for HDPE because of the single roll bar issue. If you make sure your car meets their safety standards before you start building will make it a lot easier. SCCA will allow us to participate in their PDX program but the HPDE is much more intensive in both driving and instruction.

Tim, the reason for the issue with the single roll bar is that there isn't one for your instructor. I am a national instructor with NASA ans whenever we have someone come into HPDE one with a single roll bar we do a lead and follow with a couple headsets so we can talk to each other.

how much does it cost to join HYDE and what does it cost to run?

A NASA membership is $45/year and it costs $300-$350 to run a 2 day weekend.

You can use ether dual roll pars or the single full width bar if you want to have your bases covered.

Im going with the full width roll bar, a guy name Frank out in Cali is building me one, no charge, and I will donate mine that comes with the kit to someone here who needs it. I have never met such cool people that are trying to help me out while Im over here. I cant wait to get my car on the track....what a blast that will be!!!!

Smart move Lucky with putting on the full width (or second hoop), ask me how I know? I am hooked on track days and wish I could get more instructor time, but I have the single loop. I think one more season and then off comes the body for a full width bar. Have fun and be safe!

Yeah, that's all you need. HPDE is designed for beginning drivers in the average performance car. When you go to the NASA web site, look around for the HPDE inspection sheet. You'll see exactly what specs you need to meet to get on the track. It's basic stuff like safe tires, seat belts, etc. It's all about safety. And fun, don't forget the fun.
